Disney XD Eyes ‘Herbie’ Reboot

Proposed Series Based on the Classic "Herbie, the Love Bug" Movie Franchise

A TV series based on the character of Herbie the love bug is in the works at Disney XD, according to TV Line. The character of Herbie first appeared in the 1968 film “The Love Bug,” starring Dean Jones and Michele Lee, and returned in 1974’s “Herbie Rides Again,” 1977’s “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo,” 1980’s “Herbie Goes Bananas,” the 1997 TV film revival of “The Love Bug” starring Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead), and 2005’s “Herbie Fully” Loaded, which starred Lindsey Lohan (“Mean Girls”). There was also a short-lived TV series on CBS in 1982.

Travis Braun (“Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders”) will reportedly write the proposed series, and executive produce alongside Tom Burkhard and Matt Dearborn (“Even Stevens”). The potential reboot has not settled on a gender for the child lead, looking for either a girl or boy to play Lili or Landon Reed. Lili / Landon is described as “part scientist, part entrepreneur, part daredevil” and realizes, when her or his parents go missing that they have been secretly been working on a government project: a talking car now wanted by a gang of criminals.
