‘Grey’s Anatomy’ on ABC Tops Thursday Overnights

New Thursday Network Programming Continues to Struggle

THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 2017

Household Rating/Share
CBS: 4.5/ 8, ABC: 4.1/ 7, NBC: 2.6/ 4, Fox: 2.0/ 3, CW: 0.6/ 1

-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
CBS: + 2, NBC and CW: no change, ABC: -21, Fox: -64

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led the Thursday overnight troops care of the ongoing NCAA Basketball Tournament at an estimated 4.5 rating/8 share in households for the primetime portion (from 8-11 p.m. ET). These averages, which for any live sporting event are always approximate, do not include coverage on TBS last night.

On ABC, veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” topped the evening at a 5.6/10 in the household overnights at 8 p.m., which led into an also first-place 4.2/ 7 for “Scandal” at 9 p.m. Sophomore drama “The Catch” dipped to a third 2.6/ 5 at 10 p.m., which trailed NBC’s competing “The Blacklist” Redemption” (#2: 2.7/ 5) by one-tenth of a rating point (or four percent), and its year-ago series-opener (4.6/ 8 on 3/24/16) by a hefty 41 percent. At this point, chances of a third season of “The Catch” are highly unlikely. “The Blacklist: Redemption,” meanwhile, declined from year-ago time period occupant “Shades of Blue” (3.6/ 6) by 25 percent.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was the 8-10 p.m. combination of “Superstore” (#3: 2.6/ 5), a repeat of “Trial & Error” (#4: 1.7/ 3) and an encore telecast of “Chicago Med” (#3: 2.9/ 5). “Trial & Error” was a last minute replacement for “Powerless,” which no doubt is going to face the chopping block.

Elsewhere, recent Fox reality/competition “Kicking & Screaming” (#4: 1.5/ 2 at 9 p.m.) dropped by 42 percent from lead-in “MasterChef” (#3: 2.6/ 4 at 8 p.m.). And The CW populated the evening with back-to-back repeats of “Supernatural” (#5: avg. 0.6/ 1 from 8-10 p.m.).
