Monday Final Nationals: Penguins-Predators on NBC Registers Second-Largest NHL Stanley Cup Final Game 4 Audience in 23 Years

For the fifth consecutive Monday night, NBC was prime time’s most-watched network. They led in total viewers on this night with 5.63 million from 8-11 p.m. NBC also topped this Monday among all key demos with Game 4 of the “2017 NHL Stanley Cup Final” series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Nashville Predators. 5.74 million viewers tuned into this game (5.66 million on TV, 83,000 via streaming) marking it as the second-largest Stanley Cup Final Game 4 audience on record (since 1994), behind only Chicago-Boston in 2013 (6.459 million). Predators-Penguins was significantly up 34 percent over the year-ago Game 4 of San Jose-Pittsburgh from June 6, 2016 (4.29 million).

Game 4 peaked with 6.3 million TV-only viewers during the 10:45-11 p.m. ET quarter-hour.

Locally, Nashville posted a 28.0 rating — a new NHL on NBC Sports record within that market — while Pittsburgh continued to lead all of the nation’s markets with a 30.9 rating.

Through four games, the 2017 Stanley Cup Final is averaging a Total Audience Delivery of 4.231 million viewers, up 24 percent vs. 2016 (3.414 million).

Another sporting event on the evening scored a ratings milestone: the longest game in softball’s Women’s College World Series Finals history (June 5 at 7 p.m. on ESPN) averaged a total live audience (TV + streaming) of 1.583 million viewers, the most-watched WCWS Finals Game 1 to-date (Best-of-3 series format began in 2005). The viewership for the Oklahoma-Florida marathon, 17-inning affair was up 51 percent from last year’s WCWS Finals first game featuring the Sooners and Auburn Tigers (June 6, 2016).

  1. The hockey audience seems to have grown ever since the sport went to NBC as it seems to have benefited from being on there and the network along with the Olympics and NASCAR have really helped grow NBC’s cable sports network NBCSN as well.

This series has rated very well proving the league doesn’t need a big market like Chicago or New York to do a big number for the SCFs. One thing I knew coming into this series was that it had a really great chance of out rating last year’s series with the Pens and Sharks because the Pens did most of the heavy lifting in that series last season. The Preds are a great story and situation for the NHL because of their connection to the country music scene and Carrie Underwood is probably bringing a lot of her fans to watching the games. Charles Barkley was great during the game as well as the whole Nashville crowd has been great to watch.

I’m glad it’s tied up at two a piece now because the league might actually benefit more if P.K. Subban won the cup this year more than Sid the Kid even though he’s apart of what could be a two-team dynasty this decade with the Pens and the Blackhawks. So we’ll see if we see a winner on Sunday night or a game 7 next Wednesday.

Also College Softball looked huge when I saw that number I’ve never seen that number that close to 2 million viewers for the sport. You could argue that college softball is probably the 4th most watched sport in college athletics behind men’s football and basketball and ladies basketball which would be 3rd so this means that college softball is growing as a sport. It’s unfortunate though that the girls don’t have a big league like the WNBA to be apart of after their collegiate career is over because a lot of these college girls are great specimen to watch. I think eventually what’s going to happen like 20-30 years from now is that these girls who are playing softball will eventually start playing baseball with the men and be apart of MLB in the future.

    • Hockey playoffs have been better than the NBA this year. Rooting for the Preds since I still want the Redwings to remain the last hockey team to win back to back Stanley Cup Champions even know my Redwings were missing in this years playoffs after 25 years of making it. Redwings need to be rebuild was hoping that Mr. I’s family was going to clean house fire Ken Holland & the coach and trade for Stevie Y and let him rebuild the Redwings.

      • Agreed there it hasn’t even been close between the hockey playoffs and NBA Playoffs this year and it’s carried over into the championship round for both leagues. Great point about the Wings and they need to clean house and let Stevie Y rebuild that organization into the future, right now they stand in mediocrity. My other reason for wanting the Preds to win is because I think the NHL can feed off of that culture and continue to market around it. I really want the NHL to establish itself successfully in the south I think Nashville will be their first true successful southern market plus I love P.K. Subban from his Montreal days and it will be great to see him beat Sidney Crosby this time around on the big stage for the first time.

  2. The 2017 Stanley Cup Finals are way more exciting to watch than the 2017 NBA Finals will ever be!
