Clean Sweep in the Sunday Overnights for CBS

ABC and Fox in Need of a Revamp

SUNDAY, APRIL 23, 2017

What follows are the metered market household results by half-hour for Sunday, April 23:

Household Rating/Share
CBS: 5.5/10, NBC: 3.5/ 6, ABC: 2.1/ 4, Fox: 1.0/ 2

Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
NBC: +13, CBS: – 7, ABC: -19, Fox: -23

Ratings Breakdown:
CBS topped the Sunday overnights, with a first-place finish in each of the eight half-hours care of granddaddy “60 Minutes” (#1 for the night: 7.2 rating/13 share), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (6.2/10), “Madam Secretary” (5.4/ 9) and “Elementary” (3.2/ 6). Of the four hour-long shows, only “Elementary” is not confirmed to return next season yet. With five seasons in the can, maybe it is time to bid adieu.

“Little Big Shots,” hosted by Steve Harvey, remains the biggest Sunday night draw on NBC with a 5.1/ 9 at 8 p.m. Comparably, this should be more than enough to win the time period in adults 18-49 (and all the key young adult demographics).

Next on NBC was “Chicago Justice” at a 3.7/ 6 from 9-10 p.m., which increased by 19 percent from one week earlier and should have no trouble snagging a second season renewal. That led into already renewed “Shades of Blue” at a second-place 2.9/ 5 at 10 p.m.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was an encore telecast of “Little Big Shots” at a 2.4/ 5 at 7 p.m.

Elsewhere, ABC is in need of a revamp from 8-11 p.m. with the current combination of “Once Upon a Time” (#3: 1.8/ 3), “The Match Game” (#3: 2.2/ 4) and “American Crime” (#3: 1.4/ 2) just not resonating. Veteran “America’s Funniest Home Videos” scored a second-place 2.8/ 5 at 7 p.m., which was on par from one year earlier.

Fox, meanwhile, is also in need of an overhaul with last night’s 7-10 p.m. line-up of a repeat of “The Simpsons” (#4: 0.9/ 2), two episodes of animated “Bob’s Burgers” (7:30 p.m.: #4: 1.1/ 2; 8 p.m.: #4: 1.3/ 2), “Making History” (#4: 0.9/ 1), an encore of “Family Guy” (#4: 1.1/ 2) and “Last Man on Earth” (#4: 1.1/ 2) averaging a mere 1.0/ 2 in the household overnights for the night.
