Modest Start for Fox’s ‘Star’ in Place of ‘Empire’ on Wednesday

CBS Wins the First Wednesday of 2017 in the Households, but Not by Much

What follows are the metered market (overnight) results in households by network and by half-hour for Wednesday, January 4, 2017:

Household Rating/Share
CBS: 4.2/ 7, ABC and NBC: 4.0/ 7 each, Fox: 3.7/ 6, CW: 0.5/ 1

Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:

CBS: no change, ABC: – 7, NBC: -23, CW: -29, Fox: -49

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox without “American Idol” and “Empire” will certainly feel the loss in this first quarter. Stepping in for “Empire,” new drama “Star” finished fourth in the 9 p.m. hour with a modest 3.3 rating/5 share in the household overnights. Comparably, the second half of the “American Idol” season-opener on the year-ago evening averaged a 7.4/12, which was 124 percent higher. “Star” dropped in the vicinity of approximately 40 percent from what “Empire” would normally score in the overnights. And, “Star” dipped from lead-in “Lethal Weapon” (#3: 4.2/ 7 at 8 p.m.) by 21 percent. The one positive worth noting, however, was no loss in households for “Star” in the second half hour.

CBS won this first Wednesday of 2017 in the household overnights with its combination of “Undercover Boss” (#1: 4.1/ 7), “Criminal Minds” (#2: 4.5/ 7) and sophomore “Code Black” (#3: 3.9/ 7).

NBC, which tied ABC for second overall, had a relatively positive showing, with all three dramas up slightly from their prior Wednesday originals despite the long break. “Blindspot” opened with a 3.6/ 6 at 8 p.m. (#4: +3 percent), followed by veteran “Law & Order: SVU” (#3: 4.1/ 7: + 5 percent) and “Chicago PD” (#1: 4.1/ 7: + 3 percent) from 9-11 p.m.

In season-premiere news, ABC’s “The Match Game,” hosted by Alec Baldwin, finished third at 10 p.m. with a 3.5/ 6. Comparably, that was 10 percent below lead-in “black-ish” (#3: 3.9/ 6 at 9:30 p.m.). Earlier in the evening on ABC was the combination of “The Goldbergs” (#1: 4.3/ 7), “Speechless” (#3: 3.7/ 6) and “Modern Family” (#1: 5.2/ 8) from 8-9:30 p.m.

The CW capped off the night with a repeat of “The Flash” (#5: 0.5/ 1) into an also 0.5/ 1 for canceled “Frequency” at 9 p.m.
