CBS Finished First in Each Half-Hour Despite Airing All Repeats

CBS still dominated the Tuesday overnights despite airing all repeats with its combination of “NCIS” (#1: for the night – 5.6 rating/10 share), “Bull” (#1: 4.8/ 8) and “NCIS: New Orleans” (#1: 4.2/ 7). If it is not “broke” you don’t need to “fix it,” so I imagine this CBS Tuesday line-up will remain intact next season. The network will present its fall 2017 programming plans to advertisers on Wednesday, May 17th in New York City.

On Fox, sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” returned with minimal interest at a fourth-place 1.5/ 3 in the 8 p.m. half-hour. Comparably, that was equal to the season (or series) finale of “New Girl” one week earlier. Since “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” now in season four, has enough episodes available for off-network, a fifth season renewal may not be in the cards. Fox presents its lineup to advertisers in New York on Monday, May 15th.

Next on Fox was already renewed freshman comedy “The Mick” (#4: 1.5/ 3), which the critics have taken positive notice of, followed by episode two of the long-awaited season five of drama “Prison Break” at a 2.1/ 4 (#4) from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was 16 percent below the 2.5/ 4 one week earlier, but that translated into a 2.1 rating/7 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live+3 Day data, which was Fox’s highest-rated Tuesday entertainment telecast in over 18 months. In other words, there is more to success, or lack of, than the household overnights.

NBC’s “The Voice” was a clips edition last night, and that resulted in a second-place 5.1/ 9 in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m. Two more episodes of failing sitcom “Trial & Error” followed, with a 2.4/ 4 (#2t) at 9 p.m. and a 1.8/ 3 (#4) at 9:30 p.m. And they led into an encore telecast of “Chicago Fire” at a second-place 1.9/ 4 at 10 p.m. Last in the 10 p.m. hour was Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” on ABC at a typically lackluster 1.6/ 3.

Earlier in the evening on ABC, Patricia Heaton reunited with her former “Everybody Loves Raymond” co-star on veteran sitcom “The Middle,” which scored a third-place 3.6/ 6 in the 8 p.m. half-hour. Next was expected-to-be renewed freshman entry “American Housewife” at a 2.9/ 5 at 8:30 p.m. (#3), followed by “Fresh off the Boat” (#2t: 2.4/ 4) and recent entry “Imaginary Mary” (#3: 2.2/ 4) from 9-10 p.m. Chalk up another clinker for Jenna Elfman post-“Dharma & Greg.”

Over at The CW, a repeat of “The Flash” (#5: 0.6/ 1 at 8 p.m.) led into a 0.7/ 1 for recent returnee “iZombie” (#5) at 9 p.m.

    · Grows +14% versus the comparable year-ago recap in both 18-49 (1.6 vs. 1.4 on April 5, 2016) and total viewers (7.655 million vs. 6.719 million).
    · Wins the timeslot among the Big 4 networks in adults 18-49 and every other key demo.
    · Will add substantial viewership via time-shifting and VOD – So far this season, Tuesday’s “Voice” has increased by +25% in 18-49 rating going from L+SD to L+7 (from a 2.55 to a 3.19) and more than +2.0 million viewers overall (11.1 million to 13.2 million).

    A rebroadcast of “Chicago Fire” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET):
    · Maintains 100% of its most recent regular-slot encore in 18-49 (0.6 vs. 0.6 on Dec. 27, 2016) and grows +6% in total viewers (3.011 million vs. 2.853 million).

    NBC finishes #1 for the night among the Big 4 networks in adults 18-49, marking the 16th straight Tuesday NBC has finished #1 or tied for #1.

    In Late-Night Metered Markets Tuesday Night:

    · In Nielsen’s 56 metered markets, household results were: “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” 1.7/4 with an encore telecast; “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” 2.0/5 with an encore; and ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” 1.8/5.

    · In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” 0.5/3 with an encore; “Late Show,” 0.3/2 with an encore; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” 0.5/3.

    · From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC’s “Nightline” averaged a 1.1/4 in metered-market households and a 0.3/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

    · From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, ratings were: “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” 0.9/4 in metered-market households with an encore; CBS’s “Late Late Show,” 1.0/4 with an encore.     At 8pm, ABC’s The Middle ranked as Tuesday’s #1 comedy in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5) and was the #2 TV show on the night, behind only NBC’s The Voice (8-9pm)

    At 8:30pm, ABC’s American Housewife took second to NBC’s The Voice and beat its comedy competition in the half-hour by 38% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 vs. 0.8/3 for Fox’s The Mick).

    At 9pm, ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat ranked #1 in its half-hour in Adults 18-49 over NBC’s The Voice-led Trial & Error (1.1/4 vs. 0.9/3) and held even week to week.

    At 9:30pm, ABC’s Imaginary Mary came within 1-tenth of its week-earlier premiere in the half-hour with Adults 18-49 and tied NBC’s Trial & Error for 2nd place in the slot (0.8/3).

    At 10pm, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ranked #1 in its hour among Adults 18-49 (0.7/3-tie) and remained even with last week’s return. Gaining viewers week to week (+5% – 2.3 million vs. 2.2 million), S.H.I.E.L.D. marked its most-watched telecast since its January mid-season premiere – since 1/10/17. S.H.I.E.L.D. Is a Top Gainer in L+3 and L+7 Day: Season to date S.H.I.E.L.D. is Tuesday’s biggest broadcast gainer in TV Playback, spiking over its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating by 75% in Live + 3 Day and by 113% in Live + 7 Day.

      These latest two episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have been the best of the season. Great to see the audience responding holding the ratings bump in the second week. Do you think it will be back Marc?

        It had horrible ratings, barely over 2 million viewers. It would need about 50 “bumps like that to get to decent ratings.

        You didn’t ask me but I think they’ll make more as it exists to justify Disney’s acquisition of Marvel and demonstrate it was a good idea (most people don’t look at the real ratings but at the spin).

          Granted ratings are down year on year but the show always enjoys significant DVR gains almost doubling the numbers week after week.

          Disney doesn’t need to justify buying Marvel. The Marvel movies are raking it in. What will more likely save the show is the fact that Disney owns the show and the network it’s on.

          I assume it sells well overseas too.

            Sorry, but DVR percentages are a completely misleading measure.

            For the same increase, the lower you start the higher your percentage will be.

            Say AoS has 2 million overnight viewers and NCIS has 20 (I’m rounding for ease of calculation). Both gain 1 million viewers (meaning it’s the exact same amount of money that will be added), AoS will boast of a 50% increase while NCIS has a paltry 5% increase.

            See the problem?

            As for box-office numbers, they are safely categorized in the “Fiction” section of your local library.

            Most people seem to think they are gathered independently, but they’re not. They are issued each week by the studios (and have been more and more exaggerated over time – I could go on but it’s a bit off-topic).

            The long and short is that you can’t tell if movies do well or not as the studios can (and will) say whatever they want.

            You are right that the fact the studio owns the network and the show enters into account (better to waste money on your own stuff, at least it’s a soft cost – sorta…) and part of the tragedy that is the current US scripted TV industry is that the networks keep flops on the air for the sole goal of feeding the syndication people something to sell (even if it’ll never make money as AoS never will).

            As for foreign sales, why would they be big for a show that isn’t watched? Foreign broadcasters don’t overpay for shows that don’t deliver…

            I said nothing about DVR percentages. I was talking about added viewers. DVR plays a major role in the renewals of shows. You should read up about it. I don’t know what planet you are on about box office figures. Marvel movies under Disney have been massive! Lastly, clearly you know nothing about overseas sales. Have a great day!

            I assumed you meant “percentages” because the rough audience figures with DVR are just as awful as the ones without…

            Again, DVR numbers are not what gets shows renewed. At least the 95% of shows that are flops and are getting renewed in spite of that.

            It’s internal political factors – most importantly, who is BFF with whom. Feeding the syndication people something to sell is also a factor (but not a factor in picking which flop they’ll extend for five or six seasons).

            I know all there is to know about DVR numbers. The long and short is no flop has ever become a hit with Live+3 numbers.

            On the other hand, high DVR numbers are great predictors of further ratings erosion (as we saw with Designated Survivor this season which has a big DVR gain but saw its ratings – both live and live+3 – ebb as the season went on.)

            In other words, high DVR numbers are far from something you want, especially that advertisers pay for “C3” numbers which are more correlated to Live+SD than Live+3.

            Also Live+7 is commercially meaningless and only used for spin purposes as nobody pays for them (the networks are trying but ad buyers aren’t biting).

            On Box-office figures, I am on the small planet of people who do realize that those numbers are not collated independently but given by the studios, un-audited, and published, unverified, by the press.

            So, yes, Disney can say anything about its releases.

            I’d go no but it’s a bit off-topic and requires going into historical data etc… which would make for a LOT of off-topic, but I’ll be happy to oblige were you curious.
