‘Training Day’ Star Bill Paxton Dies at 61

Actor Known for His Five Season Stint on HBO Drama 'Big Love'

Actor and filmmaker Bill Paxton, who is currently featured in CBS drama “Training Day” and has a co-starring role in the upcoming Tom Hanks sci-fi drama “The Circle” (due in theaters April 28), died Saturday due to complications from surgery. He was 61.

“It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery,” a family representative said in a statement. “A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker. Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father.”

Born on May 17, 1955 in Fort Worth, Texas, Paxton’s start in Hollywood came behind the camera as a filmmaker before appearing in small roles in films like “Stripes,” “Commando” and “The Terminator” in the first half of the 1980s. Ultimately, his roles expanded to films like “Apollo 13,” “Titanic,” “Twister” and “Mighty Joe Young.” On television, he headlined HBO drama “Big Love” from 2006 to 2011, and received an Emmy Award nomination for A&E miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys” in 2012. He had a recurring role of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” on ABC in 2014

Rob Lowe, who played Jesse James alongside Paxton’s Frank James in “Frank and James” wrote: “Devastated by the sudden loss of my close friend and one of the finest actors in the business, Bill Paxton. Renaissance man, raconteur and uniquely American national treasure. His filmography speaks for itself. His friendship was a blessing. In his memory, on this Oscar Sunday, watch “One False Move” or “A Simple Plan” to see this lovely leading man, at his finest.”

Paxton is survived by his wife of 30 years, Louise Newbury, and their two children.
