Executive producer Julie Plec announced on Twitter that “The Vampire Diaries” spinoff “The Originals” will end with season five on The CW. The news comes before the scheduled panel of “The Originals” at Comic-Con in San Diego this week.

“Many shows are not lucky enough to have a hand in deciding when the end has come…. Ending a show is always bittersweet, but for me, it’s a true blessing to be a part of making that choice,” Plec wrote.

Debuting on Oct. 3, 2013, “The Originals” set in New Orleans, follows the Mikaelson family as they try to reclaim the city. The cast includes Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, Phoebe Tonkin, Charles Michael Davis, Yusuf Gatewood, and Riley Voelkel. The now final season will begin at an undisclosed date in midseason.
