    ABC Thursday Prime (8-11pm – 5.2 million and 1.3/5 in AD18-49): Opposite CBS’ Thursday Night Football coverage, ABC finished as the #1 entertainment network on the night in Adults 18-49 for the 4th week in a row (1.3/5).

    ABC’s Thursday dramas spike in Live + 7 Day: Season to date from L+SD to Live + 7 Day Adults 18-49, Grey’s surges +67%, Notorious +64% and Murder +108%. In fact in the most recent round of L+7 (for 9/29/16), Grey’s Anatomy built to a 4.0 rating among Adults 18-49 after 7 days of TV playback (up from a 2.4 in L+SD), holding 100% of its week-earlier season opener to tie its top-rated L+7 telecast in 1 year – since 10/1/15. And Murder nearly doubled its L+SD Adult 18-49 number, soaring +92% to a 2.5 rating (up from a 1.3 in L+SD). Grey’s and Murder stand as Thursday’s Top 2 entertainment series this season in L+7.

    · For the 4th week in a row this season, ABC’s 8pm drama Grey’s Anatomy ranked as Thursday’s #1 TV series with Adults 18-49 (2.1/8).

    · Holding even week to week with young adults at 9pm, ABC’s freshman Notorious defeated Fox’s freshman Pitch by best-yet margins in the hour of 38% in Total Viewers (4.0 million vs. 2.9 million) and 13% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/3 vs. 0.8/3).

    · At 10pm, ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder ranked as the #1 TV series in the hour in Adults 18-49 (1.1/4-tie).

    Last night’s season premiere of DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW averaged 1.84M viewers, a +34% gain over THE VAMPIRE DIARIES season premiere in the same time period last season (10/8/15), and a +45% increase over last season’s time period average.

    LEGENDS held its audience from last season’s finale, matching the finale rating in A18-34 (0.5/2) and in total viewers.

    LEGENDS ranked #2 (tie) in the hour among M18-34 (0.6/3).

    In its 12th (!) season premiere, SUPERNATURAL was up +12% in total viewers (2.18M) over its series premiere last season (Wednesday, 10/7/15), and held steady in A18-34 (0.7/3).

    SUPERNATURAL delivered the most watched show in its time period in three years, since the series premiere of THE ORIGINALS on 10/3/13, and was the highest-rated show in its time period in A18-34 and A18-49 (0.8/3) in three years (10/17/13, series premiere of REIGN).

    Compared to THE ORIGINALS season premiere in the time period last season, SUPERNATURAL more than doubled its audience in total viewers (+144%), and was up +75% in A18-34 and +100% in A18-49.

    SUPERNATURAL built on its lead in by +18% in total viewers, +40% in A18-34, and +33% in A18-49.

    SUPERNATURAL ranked #3 in the hour in A18-34, and #2 (tie) in M18-34 (0.7/3).

I’m going to give Rena a shout out right now for calling out how bad of a night Thursday nights have become it’s a complete wasteland these days and anybody buying the whole Thursday Night Football killed the night like Sunday Night Football has are fools. That’s part of it but not at all the real reason why the night has collapsed considering TNF only airs on the broadcast nets like 10 Thursdays a year and the last two years it was on cable more than it was on CBS. This is a night as I was explaining to Rena has become a night where networks didn’t take advantage of nurturing the future after their hits were succeeded by the newcomers.

    NBC wasted 20 years of the Must See TV era on demo player comedies that squandered like 60-70% of their Must See TV audience and never found a succeeder for ER. For CBS they never found something to succeed Survivor and CSI and made a bad move with Without a Trace that they’re still paying for to this day although they found Big Bang Theory luckily. ABC took way too long building around Grey’s Anatomy and when they finally built up TGIT it was way too late. For years they couldn’t find anything in that 8pm hour and that cost them so badly overtime. I actually believe this would’ve been a better night for Dancing with the Stars long-term had they kept it there with Grey’s in 2006 but they moved it again that fall when Grey’s moved in. Then for FOX they never could build around American Idol and look at them now.

    All of those factors are why Thursdays have become a complete wasteland there’s no big event programming here at all. Thursdays were the night where we had true must see television where people would watch super episodes of their shows with huge guest stars. It was a huge event night and that wasted so fast. Thursdays have quickly turned into Sundays right now.

    For last night the Thursday night game was bigger this week as like any NFL showcase the ratings are dictated on the matchups and this was a better and more attractive matchup although this still wasn’t one of the higher rated ones they could’ve had. Next week is the league’s most historical matchup between the Chicago Bars and Green Bay Packers so this could rate higher but there’s an actual difference maker next week and that’s the Chicago Cubs who could have an opportunity to clinch the pennant for the National League which equals a ticket to the World Series for the franchise for the first time since 1945 which is a huge gift for FOX. Starting on Wednesday through Sunday of next week we have to keep an eye on those days if the Cubs have the opportunity to make history and clinch that pennant because even those these games are on cable’s FS1 they will have the chance.to effect the broadcast players. I actually think those games should move to FOX but contractually they probably can’t.

    One of those shows which could be effected by that next week is Chicago Med which does pretty well in the Chicagoland area and you have the Bears and Cubs on at the same time so depending on Chicago Med’s national audience outside of Chicago the ratings could be effected here. Chicago Med seems to have to do a ton of hefty lifting here to get the viewership up on the night and this is a direct result of super weak lead-ins in front of it. Superstore and The Good Place just aren’t good anchors and I’m not sure exactly what NBC should do with them but they need to be moved off that slot or the network period (cancelled) because things will get even worse once Big Bang Theory moves there permanently in two weeks time. NBC has some options to strengthen up the 8pm slot and I just found out about this new musical competition called The Stream and if nurtured right could work for them and Big Shots Seniors I believe both of which can go here. NBC likely won’t do anything until January after TNF is over but these are moves that they should be looking at here. The Blacklist could be doing way better in the demo but viewership is actually at a decent level and with a stronger set of lead-ins could go up. Also if This Is Us holds up well they can link it with Chicago Med since This Is Us seems to be a great fit with the Chicago Fire audience which is the same as the Med audience. Chicago Fire can also move as well and it might be time to move that one to either Wednesdays or Thursdays.

    For the rest of the networks starting with ABC I think Notorious needs to go now. Designated Survivor would’ve done much better on Thursdays than Wednesdays in my opinion. It seems to be dragging down the night although Murder’s ratings are a direct result of bad writing after the season 1 finish and should be rating 4x the ratings its getting now. ABC’s continued PR spins on their new shows from the past 3 seasons like Murder, Quantico, and now Designated Survivor is a direct blind result of not realizing these shows just aren’t watchable or big enough to be the hits they hoped they would be. Scandal can’t come fast enough for them and I don’t think Scandal will save them as it was already sliding last year and I think the Mom and Med audience has taken even more viewers away from that show.

    Pitch unfortunately even though I haven’t seen it is on a bad network with a bad lead-in and is a baseball show and those shows don’t have a good history at all of succeeding. I remembered when The Bad News Bears and Clubhouse failed many years ago. FOX has an opportunity here to promote it during the World Series and try to get some baseball fans to stick around for it. Even though nobody watches The CW or ever have really I gotta give Supernatural for still hanging above 2 million viewers for a show on a small network that’s been around for 11 years now.

    • Nobody in Chicago will be watching those sorry Bears that night especially on the horribly-played TNF.

      Fox wants to build FS1 up at the expense of its main network. It’s the way of the sports world these days to try to gain most revenue.

      2003 was one of the most-watched MLB postseasons in recent memory. All of Fox’s new shows promoted during it tanked. Pitch could certainly use the extra promotion (terrific show) but 3-4 million/episode is probably what it will do for the rest of the season. But considering this is Fox, that might be enough for renewal.

      • I don’t disagree especially against the Cubs but not everybody in Chicago is a Cubs fan so the Bears will probably still pop a decent number plus a lot of Packers fans live in Chicago as well. The game likely loses to the Cubs locally though so I agree there.

        It’s a bad way that the way sports has gone, games should be on FOX plain and simple don’t want to hear their sorry ass excuses for it.

        I remember 2003 that was a super high-rated postseason. I was just looking at those numbers the other day and this is just the ALCS and NLCS that year. The Bartman game drew 19.4 million viewers and game 7 drew 26.5 million viewers. ALCS game 7 drew 27.5 million and I remember there was great buzz around that final Red Sox chokejob with Boone getting the game winning home run for the Yanks. There was a big fight earlier in that series with Pedro Martinez. The 2004 season was the final real high-rated year for baseball.

        My Jays are likely done unless they do a Red Sox number from 2004 but FOX will benefit more if the Indians made it because Cleveland’s numbers will count in their local ratings but they honestly don’t need a high-rated AL team if the Cubs make it because they’ll do all of the hefty lifting. I don’t think the first few games of the WS will be that high of a draw honestly, the series will have to be dramatic and go deep at least 6-7 games to draw over 30 million viewers or get old school numbers.

        • The funny thing is that FOX got rid of most of the post-season because it felt like it was interfering with the launch of their brilliant shows and now, their brilliant shows are doing so poorly, baseball would look pretty good for them.

        • Money, moola, diñero… the best excuses that Fox, Turner and MLB can buy! Ain’t it something that FS1 hardly shows any prime time MLB regular season game and TBS shows none yet they’re the two playoff networks? Meanwhile, ESPN airs at least 3 MLB prime time games each week but only gets to air one Wild Card game. ESPN should be the network to air the bulk of these playoffs instead of TBS.

          • Yeah it is weird and good point on your part about that. It’s strange to me how this contract was drawn up where ESPN doesn’t get to air a bulk of the playoff games. ESPN would be a better network to air these games as well as most viewers especially casual sports fans have to scramble to see where FS1 is on their TV lineup. MLB just has the worst contract out of the major sports. If you ask me they could be making even more money with a better contract. I think one thing they could’ve done is drawn their contract up similar to the NHL where some games air on NBC over the weekend before championship round in this case the Stanley Cup Finals. They could’ve shared the NLCS with FOX making sure the Sunday games of the series (games 2 & 7) were on FOX and maybe Tuesday’s game 3 since they do so poorly on Tuesdays anyways.

                  • Monetarily, it was great on MLB’s part. Fox and Turner paid a combined $2.8B for 2007-13, but then paid $6.8B for 2014-21. That’s why MLB doesn’t mind having their big playoff games on cable because they got the larger money upfront (although I deem it’ll negatively affect them in the long run for not having maximum exposure).

                    And because the non-sports TV landscape continues a steep downward trend, MLB will still have great value. It’s the top summer TV option in more than half of baseball’s markets and at least the third-best summer program in the vast majority of the league’s home team markets.

                    • Like I said, FOX would be much better off with baseball the way it used to have it than with its Parade of Flops…

                      It’s striking that rights for events that don’t have more ratings got paid so much more.

                      At some point, the whole financial house of cards is bound to crash down heavily (I guess they’re really big cards!)

                      You’re right that not having maximum exposure is bound to affect them negatively. It’s a short-term over long-term decision.

              • It is a great discussion and an interesting one for baseball because out of the three major leagues NFL, NBA, and NHL it hasn’t been growing in even the past 10 years and for baseball its been 20 years. Those leagues have been growing so I think they got better contracts.

                It looks like MLB had to settle and didn’t get the best possible. It’s entirely fair too to speculate if MLB even had bigger offers from competing partners like ABC, NBC, or CBS. I know for sure CBS didn’t because they don’t have enough money to bid on it and is entirely focused on the NFL. They could’ve punched a deal with ABC in their ESPN deal but they probably didn’t get big enough offer to use ABC as their main broadcast partner. MLB should’ve been on two broadcast networks sharing the World Series that would’ve maximized their contract.

                Well lets see what happens in 2019 or 2020 for their next deal which starts in 2021 or 2022.

                • MLB got $6.8M combined from both Fox and Turner — double the amount than the 2007-14 contract. And according to sources, CBS surprisingly made such a decent bid, they were runners-up in the deal and would’ve joined Turner.

                  MLB didn’t settle which is why I don’t have much sympathy for their subdued figures on TBS.

                  • I didn’t know that CBS was a serious contender, I’m glad you brought that up. I think this is where the overall deal failed they should’ve gotten it done with Turner/CBS like they do with NCAA or Winter Olympics in the 90s. MLB should’ve partnered with two broadcast networks rotated the World Series every other year between FOX and CBS or FOX and ABC.

                    They definitely settled because this was not the best deal that they could’ve gotten especially since you just stated CBS could’ve been apart of it and doubled the Turner money. I also believe the ESPN deal should’ve included ABC as well.

                    • What probably cost CBS the MLB deal was that it would have heavily involved the scarce CBS Sports Network and CBS didn’t have a positive run with MLB in early 90’s.

                    • That’s true about CBS, I think they would’ve been alright with the World Series though. Regular season baseball wouldn’t have grown on CBSSN.

                      That’s why I think ABC would’ve been a better broadcast partner for them than FOX. I think we were just talking about how ESPN should’ve had more playoff games and weird how the wild card games in the last 2 years are still outrating games in the next 2 rounds.

                      Baseball definitely should be rotating the World Series on two different networks, I’m even disappointed that the NBA didn’t do this with their recent deal.

                • Also CBS had a decent numbers of actual hits that made them money and unlike what Bob Greenblatt seems to think, making money remains better than losing money and for all the talk of Les Moonves being unhip and not cutting-edge, he’s the only network head to have thrived in the job because he’s made money all that time (like the others he now desperately needs new hits to continue making money).

      I particularly agree in ABC’s PR. It fooled the Hollywood Press with its Wednesday no-hit lineup and now keeps trying to fool people. The problem is that it looks like they’re fooling themselves that bad ratings are really good and NBC-style that their flops are really hits.

      It all comes down to picking new shows.

      The networks have come up with dreadful development for 15 years or so and can’t come up with a hit to save their network.

      We’ve gone over the causes, and it looks like nothing will stop them from continuing to order more flops from the same bad producers until one of them goes belly up.

  4. Small typo above. Shows Superstore at 8:30 p.m. instead of The Good Place, both comedies that deserve a much bigger audience IMO. I love ’em!

    • That’s because you love them but that doesn’t mean they deserve a bigger audience. They’re not great comedies at all and the numbers reflect that. NBC can easily be doing much better in that slot without them.

        • They’re only “doing OK” if you assume the herculean task of coming up with a decently-rating show is completely beyond them.

          Acceptance of failure by re-defining it as “the new normal” is what is killing the networks.

        • You mean pretty bad but they can easily stick Little Big Shots or its spin-off there and I’m sure that option will do better.

            • It’s not just LBS they have a spin-off as well that they can program on Thursday with the Seniors. They will only stick with the comedies because Superstore by mistake got 22 episodes ordered and needs to air on the schedule somewhere.

                • Yes by mistake it’s a mediocre player and NBC loves all of their shows that’s not a good reason I believe they even loved The Mysteries of Laura and Undateable at one point but they still got rid of them anyways. They need stronger comedies and Superstore will not fix that problem, they actually need to take a break from comedies.

                    • If they’re not in love with them they wouldn’t be on the schedule although if you can make a case for one it would be Caught on Camera because that was apart of the Nick Cannon deal so they were forced to air it.

                    • Speaking of that the show got nothing out of that boost either. I know they love the show because like I said they love all of their shows but I don’t think they love it that much though because if they did they wouldn’t had put it on Mondays to fend for itself and put it on Thursdays against The Big Bang Theory.

                      I don’t know why we’re talking about how much networks love shows when that’s irrelevant to ratings?

                    • I may be partly to blame as the fact is ratings has become entirely irrelevant to renewals (except for the Top 5 best rated shows give or take a couple).

                      The rest are flops and are renewed based on network love.

                      For proof of that concept see the renewal of Scream Queens and the 6 Seasons of The Girl With The Invisible Ratings (I mean New Girl). 😉

                      Wasting the post-SB slot on Superstore had the effect of boosting the season averages near and dear to some of our friends here. I do think it shows loads of backing (similar to CBS trying to boost failed-replacement-to-CSI-Miami Hawaii 5-0.)

                      Interestingly, since ratings continued dropping around it, Hawaii 5-0 remains a solid show when it started as a disaster that contributed mightily to kill CBS’ once powerful Mondays…

                    • Interesting. I have the opposite impression on Blindspot. It was their “show of the year” last season (ie. most promoted and spun) and they renewed it in spite of the writing being clear as day it would do even worse if they renewed it.

                      Is your impression based on something in particular or just a feel (either is OK of course!)

                    • NBC moving Blindspot to the Wed 8pm slot when they did the same exact thing to Revolution (to its demise) a few years ago was a sign. NBC at least left Blacklist on Mondays after The Voice for more than one season until giving them the post SB slot to highly promote its Thursday move.

                    • They could have hidden the demise of both by giving them better lead-ins in season two, but they don’t have that many of those left… And political situations can change what with people and shows falling out of favor…

                • HA HA! LOL! He swore it was but he just repeated the same mistake they made with those cult niche comedies after the Must See TV era. Greenblatt just needs to admit that he can’t program comedies and probably never will.

                    At this point, and as much as it pains me to say it, Greenblatt would be better off dumping all scripted shows and having only sports, game shows and reality shows.

                    He can’t pick a scripted show to save his life. He is too steeped into the “hire my buds only” Hollywood culture and his buds keep delivering flops for him.

  5. I don’t think there were any winners Thursday.

    Everything performed poorly, even football which couldn’t get 10 million viewers.

    TNF is really one night too many for the NFL (but how could they turn down the ridiculous amounts of money?!)

    On CW the fact Supernatural is doing slightly not-as-poorly than Legends of Tomorrow doesn’t make its ratings good, or even OK. It’s CW-flop-level as per usual and production money they’ll never see again…

    HTGAWM continues to sink (it would make a scary graph!) while Grey’s and Chicago Med look good only in comparison to the desolation around and Blacklist is mired at low-levels that NBC will act excited about because that’s what they do…

    Shocking really.
