Sunday Final Nationals: Record Ratings for ‘Game of Thrones’ Season Opener on HBO

16.1 Million Viewers Across All Platforms

The “Sunday Fun & Games” lineup made ABC the most-watched network in Sunday prime time with an average of 4.85 million viewers. HBO lorded over all networks in all key demos from 7-11 p.m. — adults 18-49 (approx. 2.04 rating), adults 18-34 (approx. 1.61 rating) and adults 25-54 (approx. 2.31 rating) — with the night dedicated to “Game of Thrones” which returned for its seventh season in the 9 p.m. hour.

A record 16.1 million viewers tuned in for Sunday’s season seven premiere of the HBO’s “Game of Thrones” across all platforms on July 16. That includes the 10.1 million television viewers who watched its original telecast on HBO Sunday night, with the remainder tuning in for two encore telecasts combined with streaming with the HBO Go and HBO Now apps.

Comparably, this total 16.1 million tally represents an increase of 50 percent from the season six premiere on April 24, 2016, while the 10.1 million single telecast total on HBO is a rise of 27 percent.

HBO also said Sunday’s premiere had “the highest number of concurrent viewers” across the network’s streaming services. And the season-opener was also the show’s most-tweeted episode of all time, with 2.4 million tweets were sent during the episode.

HBO was also cable’s most-watched network on Sunday night (approx. 4.54 million).

  1. In other words the viewers that aren’t audited once again magically increased more than those that are.

It’s that manipulation that detracts from analyzing objectively what’s going on.

By trying to wrest a triumph froma decent (if bought with loads of promotion) performance, it makes me want to downgrade it to bring balance to the view.

The media is, however, blindly repeating the “record” results, but then again that’s why few still trust it…

  2. Do you have ‘Close Up with the Hollywood Reporter’ (Sundance), and ‘America in Color’ (Smithsonian)?

I’m looking also for ratings from ‘Hollywood’ for the last 3 weeks (I can request on those days if you prefer), and ‘America’ from the last 2 weeks. Thanks!

    • Close Up with the Hollywood Reporter (Sundance, 7/16 10:00-11:00 a.m.)
      – 76,000 viewers
      – 0.02 adults 18-49 rating

      America in Color (Smithsonian, 7/16 9:00-10:00 p.m.)
      – 143,000 viewers
      – 0.02 adults 18-49 rating

      Kids Sports Choice Awards 2017 (Nickelodeon, 7/16 8:00-9:00 p.m.)
      – 1.16 teens 12-17 rating
      – 1.45 females 12-17 rating
      – 0.87 males 12-17 rating

      Kids Sports Choice Awards 2017 (Nick-at-Nite, 7/16 9:00-9:34 p.m.)
      – 1.10 teens 12-17 rating
      – 1.37 females 12-17 rating
      – 0.84 males 12-17 rating

  3. Do you have Evo World Championships: Street Fighter V at 10 pm on Disney XD please?

  4. I do not trust anything coming out of Hollywood unless it’s been audited, which is why the Nielsens are the only credible numbers out there (but not the stuff they produce only for the networks of course).

On Game of Thrones, I think there’s lots positive to say. My problem is that it is so oversold it makes me want to underappreciate it just to get some needed balance.

I do trust you and Marc however. 🙂
