Saturday Final Nationals: Rio 2016 Summer Olympics on NBCUniversal Sinks to its Lowest Nightly Marks

From NBC Sports Group (full press release): For Saturday’s primetime coverage, NBC Olympics’ Total Audience Delivery — calculating average minute viewing across broadcast, cable, and digital — had an average of 16.3 million viewers with an 9.6 household rating. Despite a successful night for the U.S. men’s and women’s track team in the respective 4×400-meter relays, Matthew Centrowitz winning the gold medal in the men’s 1500-meters — the first American to win gold since 1908 — and a Matt Lauer interview with disgraced Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, it was the lowest nightly ratings of the Rio Olympics.

From the final Saturday in London 2012, the night was down 25 percent in viewership and down 24 percent in household rating (21.8 million viewers/12.6 household rating on August 11, 2012) when it had aired solely on NBC.

Top local markets for NBC Olympics Sat. night: Columbus 13.7/25; Salt Lake 13.0/28; Ft. Myers 12.5/22; West Palm 12.1/21; Austin 11.6/22; Washington DC 11.3/24; Indianapolis 11.3/20; Portland 10.9/24; Minneapolis 10.8/24; San Francisco 10.7/23; Nashville 10.7/17

In the afternoon, Brazil’s historic gold-medal win over Germany in men’s soccer posted 1.78 overnight on NBCSN – best for Rio 2016 men’s soccer. Men’s soccer gold-medal final on NBCSN peaked at 2.73 overnight for game’s conclusion (on PKs) from 7-7:15pm ET.
