Sunday Final Nationals: Fox Wins Prime Time with Green Bay-Washington NFL Overrun, Golden Globes Dip Slightly but Still Solid for NBC

Thanks to the 71-minute overrun of the NFL’s NFC Wild Card playoff into prime time, Fox snapped NBC’s 9-week Sunday winning streak among households and total viewers. Fox’s broadcast of the Green Bay Packers versus the Washington football team, which the visiting Packers won 35-18, posted a 21.8/37 household rating/share, with 38.8 million viewers, and is the highest-rated and most-watched telecast of any kind since Super Bowl XLIX.

Green Bay-Washington is the fourth most-watched NFC Wild Card game on Fox dating back to the 1994-95 season (22 games). Last year’s NFC Wild card Game on Fox featured a 20-17 Dallas Cowboys win over the Detroit Lions, and averaged 23.6/40, with 42.3 million viewers.

Competing markets: Milwaukee – 55.1/75; Washington – 38.6/61.

Top 10 non-competing markets: Richmond – 36.4; Norfolk – 34.9; Denver – 31.9; New Orleans – 31.2; Buffalo – 29.9; Kansas City 29.7; Albuquerque – 29.2; Baltimore & St. Louis – 28.2; and Minneapolis/St. Paul – 27.9.

The game was live streamed by more than 132,000 unique visitors on FOX Sports GO, making it the most-watched authenticated NFL game and the 6th most-watched authenticated event in FOX Sports GO’s history.

The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards” on NBC, hosted by Ricky Gervais, was down -4 percent in total viewers and down -5 percent in adults 18-49 from the year-ago awards (1/11/15). Nonetheless, it ruled the vast majority of the 8-11 p.m. time period (Fox’s NFL playoff game aired 8:00-8:11 p.m.) over its broadcast composition by far.

Earlier in the day, the Seattle Seahawks’ 10-9 down-to-the-wire victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card game on NBC averaged 35.3 million viewers to rank as the most-watched early Sunday Wild Card on record (People Meter history dates to 1988), according to Fast National data from The Nielsen Company.

Viewership was up +25 percent from last year’s early Sunday Wild Card game (28.3 million for Bengals-Colts on CBS 1/04/15), and tops by +27 percent the last early Sunday NFC Wild Card game (27.7 million for Falcons-Giants, Jan. 8, 2012 on FOX). Viewership for Seahawks-Vikings, which was the third-coldest NFL game on record with a kickoff temperature of minus-six degrees, peaked at 43.9 million viewers for the game’s exciting finish from 3:45-4 p.m. ET.

The Seahawks-Vikings NFC Wild Card telecast (1:06-4:06 p.m. ET) earned a 21.0 rating/42 share, to rank as the highest-rated early Sunday Wild Card game in 21 years (22.0/48 for Patriots-Browns on NBC, 1/1/95). The 21.0/42 for Seahawks-Vikings is up 24% from last year’s early Sunday Wild Card (17.0/35 for Bengals-Colts).

Top 10 Metered Markets for Seahawks-Vikings: Minneapolis 50.5/82, Seattle 50.4/87, Buffalo 31.0/49, New Orleans 30.7/48, Milwaukee 29.8/52, Charlotte 29.4/52, Denver 28.7/59, Portland 27.1/60, Boston 25.4/47, Richmond 25.2/43

NBC Sports Live Extra’s presentation of Seahawks-Vikings totaled 20.0 million live streaming minutes, ranking as Live Extra’s most streamed NFL postseason game on record (excluding Super Bowls) and up +115 percent from last year’s NBC Saturday primetime Wild Card game (9.3 million live minutes for Ravens-Steelers).

Univision ranked as the No. 3 network for Sunday evening among adults 18-49 and young adults 18-34, outperforming ABC and CBS in each demographic.

Airing 7-10pm, a special El Chapo themed “Aquí y Ahora” (Here and Now) outperformed CBS’ “60 Minutes” among adults 18-49 (+43%) and young adults 18-34 (+106%). “Aquí y Ahora” averaged 3.0 million total viewers, 1.4 million adults 18-49 and 580,000 young adults 18-34.
