Solid Household Overnight Victory for CBS

THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 2018

Household Rating/Share
CBS: 6.4/11, NBC: 3.0/ 5, ABC: 2.9/ 5, Fox: 2.8/ 4, CW: 0.6/ 1

Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:

CBS: +19, Fox: +12, CW: no change, NBC: – 9, ABC: -37

Ratings Breakdown
CBS stood well above the competition in the household overnights, finishing first in each of the six half-hours care of its regularly scheduled combination of 8-10 p.m. sitcoms “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the night: 10.3 rating/17 share), “Young Sheldon” (9.1/14), “Mom” (6.3/10) and “Life and Pieces” (4.7/ 8) and 10 p.m. crime solver “S.W.A.T.” (4.1/ 7). Comparably, the four comedies, on average, outdelived the series premiere of competing Fox singing competition “The Four: Battle for Stardom” (2.8/ 4 from 8-10 p.m.) by a hefty 171 percent. Comparably, “The Four” was only 12 percent above two episodes of “Hell’s Kitchen” airing on the year-ago evening. Given the promotion, consider this a very modest start for “The Four: Battle for Stardom.”

In the specials department was “Truth and Lies – Waco” from ABC News, which was on the overnight map with a 3.3/ 6 from 9-11 p.m. Earlier in the evening on ABC were repeats of comedies “The Middle” (#4: 2.4/ 4) and “American Housewife” (#4: 1.8/ 3) from 8-9 p.m.

Elsewhere, NBC featured the 8-10 p.m. sitcom block of “Superstore” (#3: 2.6/ 4), “The Good Place” (#3: 2.3/ 4), “Will & Grace” (#2: 3.6/ 6) and “Great News” (#4: 1.7/ 3) into “Chicago Fire” (#2: 3.9/ 7 at 10 p.m.). Worth positively noting for “Will & Grace” was overnight household growth out of “The Good Place” of 112 percent, but lead-out “Great News” slipped by 53 percent.

The CW capped off the evening with encore telecasts of “Supernatural” (#5: 0.7/ 1 at 8 p.m.) and “Arrow” (#5: 0.5/ 1 at 9 p.m.).
