Despite an overtime 61-60 home loss Saturday, Feb. 10 to Virginia Tech, the Virginia Cavaliers jumped up one spot to No. 1 on the Associated Press Top 25 poll entering the week of Feb. 12-18. This is first time the program has reached No. 1 since December 1982 — the senior season of 7-foot-4 great Ralph Sampson — back when the poll ranked only 20 teams.
The Michigan State Spartans climbed two spots to No. 2 after their Feb. 10 home victory over then-No. 3-but-now-No. 6 Purdue.
After five consecutive weeks at No. 1, the Villanova Wildcats fell to No. 3 after their upset home loss to St. John’s on Feb. 7.
Xavier (No. 4) achieves its highest ranking in its history, and Cincinnati (No. 5) reaches the top five for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
The North Carolina Tar Heels climb seven spots to No. 14 for the week’s biggest jump as a result of rivalry week victories against Duke and NC State.
