The postseason begins with Game No. 163 for four National League teams, thanks to two divisions with a tie for the lead at the end of the 162-game regular season.
First up on Oct. 1, the National League Central division winner will be determined between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. Following that game, the National League West division winner will be decided at Dodger Stadium between the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The winners of each tiebreaker game will play in their respective National League Division Series, beginning Oct. 4; its losers will play in the Oct. 2 National League Wild Card game at the home of the National League Central participant.
As for the entire postseason picture, both World Series teams from last year — the Houston Astros and the aforementioned Los Angeles Dodgers — have returned.
The Boston Red Sox earned the best record in the Major Leagues, with 108 wins in the regular season – the franchise’s best-ever mark in its 118-year history.
Also returning to the playoffs from last year are: the aforementioned Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies, the New York Yankees, and the American League Central division winners, the Cleveland Indians where they will play the A.L. West division winner (and defending World Champion) Houston Astros in the Division Series.
The Milwaukee Brewers appear in their first postseason in seven years. N.L. East winner Atlanta Braves are in their first playoffs in five years. And, the Oakland Athletics, who surprised about every baseball prognosticator, reach their first postseason in four years.
All games aired on MLB Network, TBS and Fox will be available to MLB.TV subscribers who are authenticated subscribers to the applicable network through a participating pay TV provider. (Cord cutters will be unable to view the MLB postseason via MLB.TV).
