The lone vice presidential debate of the 2016 election between Donald Trump’s running mate Mike Pence and Hillary Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine was seen by less than half of the Clinton-Trump presidential debate from Sep. 26 (the most watched political debate of all-time) and was the least-watched veep debate since 2000 (29 million for Dick Cheney-Joe Lieberman). The record holder for a vice presidential debate was in 2008 when 70 million viewers tuned in to watch Sarah Palin and Joe Biden face off.
NBC was the most-watched network for Tuesday’s debate with 7.02 million viewers. CBS was runner-up with 6.46 million, followed by ABC (6.14 million), Fox News Channel (6.08 million), CNN (4.16 milion), MSNBC (3.12 million), the Fox broadcast network (2.2 million), PBS (1.47 million) and Fox Business Network (392,000).
The debate’s moderator was Elaine Quijano of CBSN, the digital channel operated by CBS News.
The CW’s current No. 1 program “The Flash” returned with its third season premiere on the night, down 12 percent in total viewers (3.166 million vs. 3.584 million from 10/06/15) and down a mere 7 percent in adults 18-49 (1.3 rating vs. 1.4 rating from 10/06/15) compared to its second season premiere telecast.
