Modest Start for ABC and NBC’s New Summer Thursday Line-Ups

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a night of series and season premieres on ABC and NBC. The most disappointing was the two-hour launch of ABC reality/competition “Boy Band,” which scored a mere 2.2 rating/4 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, this was eight percent below the already lackluster 2.4/ 4 for “BattleBots” on the year-ago evening. And the average 2.1/ 4 from 8:30-10 p.m. was a loss of 12 percent from the 2.4/ 5 for the debut half-hour at 8 p.m. Considering most new shows drop 10 to 20 percent in week two, the time may not have been right for another new singing competition.

Next on ABC was the premiere of the revival of kooky talent competition “The Gong Show,” which at a 2.8/ 5 in the 10 p.m. hour was 27 percent above its “Boy Band” lead-in. One year earlier, a repeat of “Celebrity Family Feud” scored a 3.1/ 6 in the overnights.

NBC ranked a consistent second for the evening care of the season premiere of “Hollywood Game Night” (2.7/ 5 at 8 p.m.), the return of game show “The Wall” (2.8/ 5 at 9 p.m.) and the season premiere of perennial summer scripted drama “The Night Shift” (2.5/ 5 at 10 p.m.). Comparably, “The Night Shift” was 92 percent above year-ago time period occupant “Aquarius” (1.3/ 2 on 6/23/16).

Also in originals last night was Fox’s combination of game shows “Love Connection” (#3t, 2.3/ 4) and “Beat Shazam” (#3t, 2.0/ 3),which were at typical overnight levels.

Elsewhere, CBS was in all repeats care of “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the night: 4.3/ 8), “Superior Donuts” (#1: 3.0/ 5), “Mom” (#1: 3.0/ 5), “Life in Pieces” (#2: 2.5/ 4) and a 10 p.m. edition of “MacGyver” (#3: 1.9/ 3). And The CW populated the evening with back-to-back repeats of “Supernatural,” which averaged a 0.6/ 1 from 8-10 p.m.
