‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ ‘Veep’ and ‘Little Big Lies’ Snag Top Three Awards at the ‘Primetime Emmys’

NBC’s veteran “Saturday Night Live” capped off its highest-rated season in years as the most honored program on “The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards,” with nine trophies. Included were Emmys for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series and Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon in the supporting comedy categories. McKinnon also won last year. Next with eight Emmy wins was Hulu drama “The Handmaid’s Tale,” including Outstanding Drama and Elisabeth Moss and Ann Dowd as Outstanding Lead and Supporting Actress in a Drama, respectively.

HBO was the most awarded network, including Emmys for “Little Big Lies” for Outstanding Limited Series and Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern as Lead Actress and Supporting Actress; and “Veep” for Outstanding Comedy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Lead Actress in a Comedy. With six consecutive wins in the category, Louis-Dreyfus has made the record books for the most Emmy victories for the same role. This win has also tied her with Cloris Leachman, who before this telecast held the record for most Primetime Emmys wins by a single performer (with eight).

Double honored was Donald Glover of FX comedy “Atlanta” for Outstanding Lead Actor and Directing for a Comedy. And back in the winner’s circle for the second straight year was Sterling K. Brown, this time for Lead Actor in a Drama for NBC’s “This Is Us.”
