Ratings Breakdown:
ABC remained the network to beat in the Monday overnights thanks to its combination of “Dancing With the Stars” (#2: 6.4 rating/10 share from 8-10 p.m. ET) and bona fide hit “The Good Doctor” (#1: 6.9/12 at 10 p.m.). Comparably, “The Good Doctor” almost beat competitors “Scorpion” on CBS and “The Brave” on NBC (3.5/ 6 each) combined, and it was 103 percent above short-lived year-ago time period occupant “Conviction” (3.4/ 6 on 10/24/16). But the home of “The Voice,” NBC, is still the network to beat in adults 18-49 (and all the key demos) thanks to the singing compeititon at a dominant 6.6/10 from 8-10 p.m.
CBS’ two-hour comedy block, unfortunately, continues to underperform following “The Big Bang Theory,” and the absence of adult Sheldon and company (which returns to the Thursday 8 p.m. half-hour on Nov. 2) will take its toll. “Big Bang” topped the night, of course, with an 8.8/14 in the 8 p.m. half-hour. Recently introduced lead-out “9JKL” picked up some steam with a 4.7/ 7 (#3) at 8:30 p.m., but the overnight retention out of “Big Bang” was still only 53 percent. Next was sophomore “Kevin Can Wait” at a 3.9/ 6 (#3) at 9 p.m., which was only on par with year-ago occupant “2 Broke Girls,” and that led into a modest 3.0/ 5 (#3) for newbie “Me, Myself & I,” which slipped from “Kevin Can Wait” by 23 percent. One year earlier, the return of “The Odd Couple” scored a 3.2/ 5 in the Monday 9:30 p.m. half-hour.
Aforementioned Eye net drama “Scorpion” at 10 p.m., meanwhile, was down by 26 percent year-to-year (versus a 4.7/ 8 on 10/24/16).
Next week, “Kevin Can Wait” moves to Monday at 8 p.m. into “9JKL,” followed by “Me, Myself & I,” now at 9 p.m. into the return of “Superior Donuts.” Given how poorly “Me, Myself & I” is fairing, chances are CBS will give the more worthy “Superior Donuts” the 9 p.m. slot.
Elsewhere, Fox’s pairing of “Lucifer” (#4: 2.5/ 4) and “The Gifted” (#4: 2.4/ 4) is perfectly comptabible, albeit moderately rated in the overnights. And week three of new CW drama “Valor” was consistent at a subpar 0.6/ 1 in the household overnights at 9 p.m., which slipped from lead-in “Supergirl” (#5: 1.3/ 2 at 8 p.m.) by 54 percent. One year earlier, “Jane the Virgin” scored a 0.8/ 1 in the Monday 9 p.m. hour.
The bottom line: ABC’s “The Good Doctor” is the only new Monday night series drawing notable interest and CBS minus “The Big Bang Theory” next week could have some difficulties.
