A Selection of Memes Which Originated From TV Shows and Series

Memes. It may be slightly tricky to give the term a universal definition but one thing’s for sure – we all know a meme when we see one and everyone loves a good meme, right? Right! In a climate where almost anyone and anything can be turned into an Internet sensation overnight, it seems like a good time to look at some of the older and more classic memes, a good amount of which originated or have some connection to various favorite TV shows or series over the years. Alternatively, if you’re not the biggest fan of the meme culture that we find ourselves firmly steeped in, then at least you have an idea of whose door you’re going to be knocking on to complain. It really is a win-win situation here.

That’s a Paddlin’ (“The Simpsons”)

If you’ve been hearing the words “that’s a paddlin'” being uttered more than usual recently, then there’s a chance that you’ve paused for a second before realizing that you don’t have a clue what they’re talking about and carrying on with your day. The phrase is in reference to “The Simpsons” episode titled The PTA Disbands where Jasper, one of the older characters, warns the children that the punishment for breaking the rules will result in them feeling the full force of his wooden paddle. Of course, the Internet has taken the still frame from the scene and now the term is used to make fun of overly stringent rules from an unjustly authoritarian figure.

Doge (“Homestar Runner”)
While the Doge meme is based on pictures uploaded by Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sati’s Shiba Inu dog (named Kabosu), the term doge dates back to 2005 when it was mentioned in an episode of the flash animated cartoon series “Homestar Runner.” The meme often contains a picture of the cute looking dog with an enlarged face and a captioned internal monologue printed in the popular comic sans font. The meme has become so widespread throughout popular culture that an alternative crypto currency has been based on it and some online casinos, such as mBitcasino, are even accepting the meme inspired Doge coin for its games and sportsbook. Ever fancied betting on the NBA or NFL with a meme? It’s fairly difficult to argue against the power of the meme in circumstances such as this.

60’s “Spiderman” (Spiderman…duh)

This is certainly one of the more curious yet hilarious memes from the outside looking in. Some of the more creative users on Tumblr took it upon themselves to trawl through the archives of illustrations from the 1960 “Spiderman” comics and add ludicrously out of context captions to the pictures. What makes this meme particularly funny is that the captions all seem to work and often end up making Spiderman look and sound like a sassy piece of work. One of the best things to come out of this meme is an appreciation for some of the older “Spiderman” shows from generations who were probably previously unaware that they existed and we’re certainly in favor of that.

There are literally hundreds of TV series inspired memes out there for you to enjoy and there’s a good chance that you’ve scrolled past a few without even knowing it. At the end of the day, a meme is only as good as its origin. So, if you are watching something captivating on Netflix or cable television, then it’s likely that there’s already something out there that will have you rolling on the floor. Now, it’s just up to you to find it!
