Ratings Analysis
“The Big Bang Theory” on CBS topped the night in the household overnights as always, with a 10.2 rating/16 share in the 8 p.m. half-hour. But it was not enough to lift the Eye net to victory for the evening, which trailed “American Idol” on Fox (6.1/10 from 8-10 p.m.) by four-tenths of a rating point. One year earlier, two hours of “Idol” scored a 7.1/11 on the night.

Airing out of “The Big Bang Theory” was freshman “Life in Pieces” at a second-place 5.9/ 9 at 8:30 p.m., which dropped by a typical 42 percent. While ratings for “Life in Pieces” on paper certainly looks respectable, erosion of this magnitude is just too severe.

Next on CBS was “Mom” at a respectable 5.4/ 8 (#2) in the 9 p.m. half-hour, followed by week two of Jane Lynch sitcom “Angel From Hell” at a 4.6/ 7 at 9:30 p.m. (#3). Comparably, “Angel From Hell” dipped by 13 percent from its week-ago series-opener (5.3/ 8 on Jan. 7), which is very typical. And it held 85 percent of the “Mom” lead-in, which does mean it is compatible. In other words, it could be better but it also could be worse.

“Elementary” capped off the night for CBS with a second-place 3.9/ 7 in the 10 p.m. hour, which trailed week two of competing “Shades of Blue” on NBC (#1: 4.7/ 8) by 17 percent. Comparably, “Shades of Blue” dropped by 22 percent from its week-ago series-opener (6.0/10), which translated into 8.55 million viewers and a 1.8 rating/6 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was canceled “Heroes Reborn” at a fourth-place 2.5/ 4 in the 8 p.m. hour, followed by “The Blacklist” at a 5.1/ 8 at 9 p.m. Comparably, “The Blacklist” built from the 8:30 p.m. of “Heroes Reborn” (2.4/ 4) by a hefty 112 percent.

Elsewhere, “Beyond the Tank” could not compete on ABC at 8 p.m., with a 2.9/ 5. And it led into week two of “My Diet is Better Than Yours” at a minuscule 1.4/ 2 in the household overnights from 9-11 p.m. And The CW populated the night with two-hour special “The World Dog Awards” at a 0.8/ 1.
