It was the final night of the 2015-16 regular season for the NBA which featured two of the sports’ legendary moments: the Golden State Warriors achieved the all-time best 73rd regular season victory on ESPN while on ESPN2, future NBA Hall-of-Famer Kobe Bryant — in the final game of his 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers — scored an incredible 60 points in front of a loud Staples Center home crowd cheering him on. Both game telecasts concluded past 1 a.m. on the east coast yet combined for 7.11 million total viewers — a highly positive number for the NBA; the ESPN game earning the total-viewer edge: 3.649 million vs. ESPN2’s 3.465 million. Nonetheless, Kobe Bryant on ESPN2 outdrew the Warriors’ 73rd win on ESPN among adults 18-49: 2.211 million to 1.999 million in the demographic.
In the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose market, Grizzlies-Warriors delivered a 23.22 local rating on CSN Bay Area. This marks the all-time highest-rated regular-season NBA telecast on a regional sports network in the United States to-date, and the second-best rating on record of any sport in a regular season on a regional sports network (MLB Seattle Mariners-Anaheim Angels on FSN Northwest in Seattle-Tacoma scored a 25.3 local rating on Sep. 23, 1997).
Jazz-Lakers drew a 6.5 local rating in Los Angeles: the market’s best-ever rating for an NBA regular season game on either ESPN or ESPN2.
