Ratings Breakdown:
CBS scored a Thursday overnight victory, inching past second-place ABC by one-tenth of a household rating point. But the main observation is the lack of success for any of the recently introduced Thursday night network entries.
In week two news, NBC reality/competition “Strong” did not live up to its title with a fourth-place 2.0/ 3 in households at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was nine percent below the already anemic 2.2/ 4 opener one week earlier, and that translated into just 3.27 million viewers and a 0.8 rating/3 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.
Also in week two was Fox reality/competition “American Grit” at a lowly 1.4/ 2 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was one-tenth of a rating point below the 1.5/ 2 premiere one week earlier, which resulted in just 2.35 million viewers and a 0.8/ 3 in the demo (based on the Live + Same Day data). And the household retention out of lead-in “Bones” (#3: 2.9/ 5 at 8 p.m.) was just 48 percent.
Episode three of NBC drama “Game of Silence,” meanwhile, scored a series-low 2.3/ 4 (#3) at 10 p.m., which dipped from lead-in “The Blacklist” (#2: 5.0/ 8 at 9 p.m.) by a significant 54 percent. One year earlier, “Dateline” averaged a 3.9/ 7 in the time period.
Recent CBS entry “Rush Hour” was also lacking, with a 2.8/ 5 at 10 p.m. a considerable 43 percent below the 4.9/ 9 for “Elementary” on the year-ago evening. Comparably, “Rush Hour” dropped from lead-in “2 Broke Girls” (#3: 4.3/ 7 at 9:30 p.m.) by 35 percent.
Tops for the night, of course, was “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS at a 9.2/16 at 8 p.m. And that led into a 5.2/ 9 (#2) for sophomore “The Odd Couple” at 8:30 p.m., which declined by 43 percent. Next on the Eye net was must see “Mom,” another standout installment, at a dominant 5.3/ 9 in the 9 p.m. half-hour. Note to the Emmy voters: “Mom” belongs on the list of Outstanding Comedy Series. It is time.
Elsewhere, ABC had a typical Thursday in the household overnights care of “Grey’s Anatomy” (#2: 6.0/10), “Scandal” (#2: 4.9/ 8) and freshman “The Catch” (#1: 3.7/ 6). And “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” (#5: 1.4/ 2 at 8 p.m.) led into a 0.8/ 3 for “The 100” on The CW – also overnight business as usual.
