ABC Orders Spin-Off Series from ‘The Goldbergs’

The Teachers of William Penn Academy Will Be the Focus

ABC has made a straight-to-series order for a new spin-off based on “The Goldbergs.” The series, set in the 1990s and slated for next season, will follow the teachers of William Penn Academy – led by Tim Meadows (Principal Glascott), Bryan Callen (Coach Mellor) and AJ Michalka (Lainey Lewis) – who, despite their eccentricities and crazy personal lives, are heroes to their students.
The story is by Marc Firek and Adam F. Goldberg. Teleplay is by Marc Firek. The series is from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios. Adam F. Goldberg, Doug Robinson and Marc Firek are executive producers. And the number of episodes ordered has not been confirmed.

  1. Wait? What? Is this the result of the failed pilot they already aired? Or a new premise? I liked the Lainey character from the Goldbergs’ but she wasn’t in the 80’s pilot they aired. Any more info?

    • Thanks Marc. I actually read a story on another site that said :Goldberg and Firek then made a new pitch to ABC about a spinoff, scaling back the originals’ family life focus to make it more of a workplace comedy set at the Philadelphia school Adam (Sean Giambrone) on the mothership series graduated from. The new concept also includes Michalka’s character from The Goldbergs, Erica Goldberg’s (Hayley Orrantia) best friend, who was not part of last year’s pilot.” So, it looks like they retooled it and made a different pitch. Now I’m interested, because the original pilot that aired in January of this year wasn’t very engaging.

  2. The backdoor pilot they aired earlier this year was very blah. This might work but it will need to be better than the pilot was.
