Apple iPhone 12: The News You Need to Know

The new line of Apple iPhone 12 arrived about a month late on the usual schedule, this due to the Covid-19 pandemic but also due to the fact that the new model is such in many respects. It is in fact certainly the most innovative iPhone compared to the previous ones since the launch of the iPhone X.

A NEW, OLD DESIGN

Let’s start with something new but it could also be understood as old. In terms of design, Apple iPhone 12 marks a return to the past. In fact, it has squared lines, angular edges and in generating a less sinuous trend. You can imagine iPhone 12 as a kind of re-edition of the iPhone 4 or iPhone 5, phones that had “sharp” edges. In reality, iPhone 12 is the result of the design grammar that emerges from iPad Pro and which from this year will also migrate to iPad Air.

A NEW PROCESSOR

Apple iPhone 12 has a new A14 processor. We already knew a lot about this processor before the launch of the iPhone 12 because it was introduced when Apple presented the iPad Air at the Times Fly event. The chip manufactured by TSMC is based on a 5-nanometer manufacturing process. This is also new, considering that the iPhone 11 range uses a 7-nanometer chipset. Most notably, it will have the power of a MacBook Pro!

Right now, the first data show that the processor has 20% more performance than the A13, consistent with those who estimated an 18% advantage over an iPhone 11 Pro before the launch. The processor, however, may have been calibrated to obtain a tangible advantage in terms of consumption which, however, will not all be to the benefit of autonomy. The new iPhone is in fact compatible with 5G, a technology that consumes a lot of energy.

THE NEW 5G

iPhone 12 will also have 5G connectivity. Here we have to talk about news only in relation to the iPhone world because there are really many 5G phones on the market. But we know that Apple doesn’t come first on many things, it comes by innovating. Technology is managed differently from what competitors do, to overcome its main problem: consumption.

Apple uses a technology called “smart data mode” capable of managing the network, going from 5G to 4 G and vice versa, depending on energy savings and the functions required at that time. Among the elements to consider is, as expected, the fact that of the two 5G technologies, the iPhone 12 uses only sub-6GHz in Europe, more suitable than mmWave.

A NEW IPHONE AMONG THE NEW IPHONES

Another novelty for which we should look to the launch of the iPhone 12 is the number of models that follow a renewal of the screens. For the first time, Apple presents 4 of them, all of different sizes:

  • iPhone 12 mini – 5.4-inch display
  • iPhone 12 – 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 12 Pro – 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max – 6.7-inch display

THE NEW SCREEN BELOW AND ABOVE

The Apple iPhone 12 differs from the iPhone 11 because all models have an OLED screen. Last year only the Pro models had this technology that allows not to have brighter images and to reduce power consumption, the latter a fundamental aspect when it comes to phones with 5G. Even the iPhone 12 mini has an OLED screen.
