Highly regarded by most fans as their No. 1 favorite episode of the classic sitcom “Seinfeld“, “The Contest” debuted on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1992 on NBC.

Written by “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David, George Costanza (Jason Alexander) gets caught by his mother not being “master of his own domain” to Glamour magazine. She falls in shock and is sent to the hospital. Upon retelling his story at the diner, George vowed to Jerry Seinfeld, Kramer (Michael Richards) and Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to never do “that” again. They scoffed at the thought, disbelieving his promise. To make matters interesting, the four decide to wager money to test each other’s will to not do “that” the longest.

Throughout the episode, various temptations try to derail the four such as a naked woman in the apartment across the street from Jerry’s place, a nurse bathing a beautiful female patient at a hospital, and the late John F. Kennedy Jr. participating in fitness class.

An average of 18.5 million viewers tuned in to its original telecast, ranking third for its 9 p.m. slot that night, behind Part Two of ABC’s hit miniseries “The Jacksons: An American Dream” (38.3 million) and a two-hour episode of CBS crime drama “In the Heat of the Night” (18.6 million).
