-Ratings Breakdown:
“Empire” led Fox to midweek overnight victory, but the novelty has clearly worn off. “Empire” scored a 5.6 rating/9 share in the metered market households, topping the night and building from respectable lead-in “Lethal Weapon” (#2: 4.8/ 8 at 8 p.m.) by 17 percent. Comparably, however, this was a considerable 27 percent below the 7.7/12 on the year-ago evening.

“Survivor” on CBS (#1: 5.4/ 9) remains a bona fide hit, ranking first in the 8 p.m. hour and coming in on par from the year-ago evening. But veteran lead-out “Criminal Minds” slipped by 12 percent year-to-year with a 4.6/ 8 at 9 p.m. And that led into a 3.8/ 7 (#2t) for sophomore medical drama “Code Black” at 10 p.m., which one year earlier was healthier at a 4.4/ 8. Anticipate another distant third place time period finish for “Code Black” in adults 18-49.
Over at ABC, freshman drama “Designated Survivor” still dominated at 10 p.m., but it sunk to a series-low 4.2/ 7. Comparably, however, it was still noticeably stronger than the 3.3/ 6 for year-ago time period occupant “Nashville,” and it bested the competition – “Chicago PD” on NBC and aforementioned “Code Black” on CBS, each with a 3.8/ 7 — by 11 percent. Results demographically for “Designated Survivor” should show a larger advantage in the key young adult categories.

Earlier in the evening on ABC was the sitcom combination of “The Goldbergs” (#3: 4.4/ 7), “Speechless” (#3: 3.8/ 6), “Modern Family” (#2: 5.0/ 8) and “black-ish” (#4: 3.6/ 6) from 8-10 p.m.

Elsewhere, NBC remains a marginal presence on Wednesday a la dramas “Blindspot” (#4: 3.6/ 6), granddaddy “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 3.8/ 6) and aforementioned “Chicago PD” (#2t: 3.8/ 7). And recent drama entry “Frequency” on The CW (#5: 0.7/ 1 at 9 p.m.) slipped by 50 percent from lead-in “Arrow” (#5: 1.4/ 2 at 8 p.m.), which is too severe a decline.
