Friday Ratings: Continued Success for Saint Peter’s Scores Big for CBS

The Peacocks men’s basketball team from Saint Peter’s University, a college from Jersey City, NJ with an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students and its campus as merely large as one Manhattan city block, has captivated the nation as their NCAA championship dreams continued to survive on this Friday night. Their improbable 67-64 upset win over Purdue helped CBS dominate in prime time. Here were their half-hour splits:

8:00 p.m. — Viewers: 9.11 million, Adults 18-49: 1.9 rating/17 share

8:30 p.m. — Viewers: 11.41 million, Adults 18-49: 2.6 rating/21 share

9:00 p.m. — Viewers: 12.49 million, Adults 18-49: 2.7 rating/22 share

Also helping boost viewership is the presence of a college hailing from the New York TV market that had reached the Sweet Sixteen round for the first time since the 2000 Seton Hall team — one that featured a player named Shaheen Holloway, who’s currently Saint Peter’s coach.

The game in the nightcap on CBS was North Carolina versus UCLA;

10:00 p.m. — Viewers: 7.98 million, Adults 18-49: 2.0 rating/17 share

10:30 p.m. — Viewers: 6.35 million, Adults 18-49: 1.7 rating/14 share

Keep in mind that results for any live sports are always approximate.

The other four broadcast networks aired original programming on the night. Like last Friday, the most-watched non-basketball offering, in total viewers, was ABC’s “Shark Tank” (3.26 million). Fox’s “WWE Friday Night SmackDown” (averages listed above) matched “Shark Tank” in adults 18-49.

NBC started its night with “The Blacklist” (Viewers: #3, 2.64 million; A18-49: #4, 0.2/ 2 at 8-9 p.m.) followed by “Dateline” (Viewers: #3, 2.57 million; A18-49: #4, 0.3/ 2 at 9-11 p.m.). ABC’s “20/20” (Viewers: #2, 2.85 million; A18-49: #3, 0.3/ 3 at 9-11 p.m.) bested “Dateline” to be the night’s top newsmagazine.

The CW duo of “Charmed” (Viewers: #5, 0.33 million; A18-49: #5, 0.0/ 0 at 8-9 p.m.) and “Dynasty” (Viewers: #5, 0.20 million; A18-49: #5, 0.0/ 0 at 9-10 p.m.) each dipped from their normal levels.
