HBO Greenlights Drama ‘The Son’

Jake Gyllenhaal Project Expected to Debut in 2021

HBO has ordered limited series “The Son,” with Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star and executive produce.  “The Son” is described as a tale of vengeance set amid Oslo’s brutal hierarchy of corruption. Gyllenhaal will executive produce under his Nine Stories Productions banner along with Riva Marker. Lenore Zion will serve as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. In addition, Denis Villeneuve is attached to direct and executive produce.

The series, which is expected to debut in 2021, is based on from the New York Times bestselling novel, which follows Sonny Lofthus, an escaped convict: an opioid addict who can’t recall his past, on the run from the law toward an unknown truth.

“Westworld” creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy will also executive produce and serve as co-showrunners via Kilter Films with Athena Wickham of Kilter also executive producing. Bold Films’ David Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, Michel Litvak, and Svetlana Metkina also serve as executive producers with Nesbø and Niclas Salomonsson. Nine Stories Productions, Kilter Films, and Bold Films will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.
