HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Leads the Emmy Nominations

Nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced yesterday morning. After not qualifying to be on the ballot last year, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” led the nominations with 22 nods, including outstanding drama against last year’s winner, “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu. “The Americans,” “The Crown,” “Stranger Things,” “This Is Us” and “Westworld” will also compete for top drama. Second behind “Game of Thrones,” with 21 nominations each, is sophomore HBO drama “Westworld” and NBC’s veteran “Saturday Night Live.”

Netflix led the total number of Emmy nominations, with 112, followed by HBO with 108.

In the best actress in a drama category, last year’s winner, Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), was nominated again. Her competition includes Claire Foy (“The Crown”) and Keri Russell (“The Americans”) and Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), who made the history books with the first nomination for an Asian actress in the category.

The absence of HBO’s “Veep” (due to a delay in filming) also means there will be a new winner in best comedy for the first time in four years. Since 2007, there have been only three best comedy winners: “Veep,” “Modern Family” and “30 Rock.” Competing is Donald Glover’s “Atlanta,” “Barry,” “black-ish,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm, “GLOW,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Silicon Valley,” Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” ABC’s “Modern Family” failed to make the cut in the sitcom’s history.
