Did you know your vehicle needs a specific number plate called the High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP)? In India, the HSRP is the licence plate that meets the security and quality guidelines set by the government. It is anti-duplicated and makes it easier to trace vehicles. Since the government has made it compulsory to have HSRPs installed, it becomes important to know what an HSRP is and how to get one registered for your vehicle.
Let’s understand what High-Security Registration Plates are and how we can apply for them.
What is a High-Security Registration Number Plate?
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways changed the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, and also issued a notification in 2005 for having HSRPs to uniquely demarcate the number plate system. This change has now made it compulsory for old and new vehicles to have an HSRP number plate with a colour-coded sticker, effective 1 April 2019.
HSRP stands for High-Security Registration Plate. These number plates are prepared with aluminium sheets that also comprise a laser ID system along with a reflective layer. These plates are electronically linked to their vehicles. They are attached to the vehicle using at least two locks, which cannot be reused.
Features of HSRP:
These are the features of the HSRP number plates:
- A blue hologram with a chromium-based Ashoka Chakra emblem at the top left corner that measures precisely 20 mm by 20 mm.
- A unique 10-digit Permanent Identification Number (PIN) is laser engraved in the lower left corner.
- The letters and numbers hot-stamped on the plate show the state code, district code, and a unique number, with alphabetic letters showing the series that will follow. Every letter and number bears at an angle of 45 degrees the word “INDIA”.
- Below the Ashoka Chakra hologram, the international registration code “IND” is printed.
Who Needs a High-Security Registration Plate?
All vehicles must have HSRP plates. Vehicles bought after 2019 already have HSRP plates, but vehicles bought before 2019 need to replace their old plates with HSRP plates.
Why High-Security Number Plates are Important?
Here are some important benefits of High-Security Registration Plates:
- Threat of Vehicle Burglary Reduces
HSRPs have advanced security features that make them nearly impossible to tamper with or duplicate. This makes it much harder for thieves to use fake plates, reducing the risk of vehicle theft and increasing the chances of recovering stolen vehicles.
HSRPs have a unique laser-etched serial number that can be read by special cameras. This makes tracking vehicles easy and transparent, helping to reduce criminal activities.
HSRPs come with a unique identification code and a hologram, allowing authorities to verify if a vehicle is genuine quickly. This helps prevent fraud, such as selling stolen vehicles or using fake number plates, ensuring that vehicles on the road are legally registered.
The Indian government promotes HSRPs to enhance road safety. The unique codes and holograms make identifying vehicles involved in traffic violations, accidents, or other illegal activities easier. This helps authorities take appropriate action and maintain order on the roads, reducing the likelihood of criminals using vehicles for illegal purposes.
