How to Quickly Find the Filing Number on Your Deed

If you’ve just bought a house, you’ll likely wonder how to find the property filing number on your Deed. But don’t worry – it’s easy once you know what to look for! Here are three simple steps that will show you how to find the property filing number on your Deed in no time.

The Basics: What is a Deed?

A deed is a document that proves ownership of property. It contains a lot of information about the property, including who owns it, how much it costs and when it was bought or sold. A deed can also include restrictions or covenants attached to the property. To find your Deed, you need your state’s filing number and your county’s name (sometimes referred to as an index number). Contact your county recorder’s office for assistance if you need to know this information offhand. The Recorders will be happy to answer any questions you have and should provide access to records so that they can identify the correct filing number. 

Alternatively, look in your mailbox or on the notice board outside your building if there’s one nearby – someone might have put up a poster with more details of where you should look. 

If not – there’s always Google Maps Street View! Open up Google Maps and type in your home address in the search bar at the top left corner of the screen.

In other places, you can look for the filing number.

You can also find the filing number by looking at your Deed. The number will be on the top right corner of your Deed, near where it says Deed. You may need to use a magnifying glass or flashlight to see it. In some states, you can find your filing number in an online database that keeps track of all recorded deeds. You can contact your county clerk for more information about this method. Here is what I found when I looked up my county clerk: 

 It costs $5 per search, and there is a waiting period before results are available. 

 Here is how I was able to get my filing number without paying: 

 I searched for someone else’s Deed using their name, and the search engine told me which one was mine!

What to do if you can’t find the filing number

Your Deed may be missing if you need help finding the filing number. Contact your county records office, and they will be able to provide you with a copy of your Deed. Once you have this information, it should be easier to find the filing number. If all else fails, don’t worry! You can still file for a duplicate title at any time. Just follow these steps: 

  1. Complete an application in duplicate and fill out the information asked for on page one of the application. 
  2. Include copies of your identification (driver’s license or passport) and any other evidence which supports who you are (e.g., Deed to property).

How to Find Your Filing Number

A filing number is a code that identifies a specific property. It is usually located in the top right corner of your Deed, and it looks like this:

You can use this number to access information about your property, such as ownership history and tax records. The first thing you need to do is find the filing number. The best way to do this is by looking at your Deed, which should be filed with your county’s recorder of deeds office. If you need help finding your Deed, check with the person who sold you the property or speak to an attorney. If all else fails, call the recorder of deeds office in your area, and they will tell you where to look for your Deed. However, their hours may vary, so don’t rely solely on them. 

 Next, try locating your filing number in the upper-right-hand corner of the document (it will look something like this 120650014). It should start with 120 followed by six digits and then two letters (ex: 120650014). Once you have found it write down this number because we’ll need it later.

The best way to find the filing number on your Deed

A deed is a document that contains information about where your property is located and who owns it. The paper also includes a filing number that can be used to find records related to your property. If you have a deed but you can’t seem to find the filing number, here are some tips on how you can locate it:

-Open up your Deed. You should see a line on page one that says Filing followed by an eight-digit number (). 

-If there’s no mention of filing in the first paragraph of your Deed, this may indicate that this document is not a genuine copy. Contact a land surveyor to determine whether or not this is true. 

-Check if your previous deeds are stapled together; they may contain more than one filing number. 

-Look for other papers or documents with numbers, such as contracts or certificates of occupancy.


Searching your Deed’s title and finding the correct filing number is a tedious process, but luckily, there are several ways to find this vital piece of information quickly. 

 How to find the filing number on the Deed:

  1. Download the Clerk of Court App (iOS), which will allow you to search by Deed or case number.
  2. Contact County Clerk’s office in person or over the phone (more complex).
  3. Contact your Title Insurance Company (requires trust account).
