Monday Final Nationals: ‘9JKL’ Series Debut on CBS Loses Half of its ‘Big Bang Theory’ Lead-In

Monday night’s “Monday Night Football” game – a Kansas City Chiefs’ 29-20 victory over the Washington Redskins – averaged 12.1 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, according to Nielsen, helping ESPN win the night among all networks (broadcast or cable) on Monday in households, viewers and all key male and adult demos (18-34, 18-49 and 25-54). This is the fourth straight Monday that ESPN has won the night in all categories.

On ESPN, the game peaked during the 11:30-11:45 p.m. ET quarter hour with an 8.4 US household rating and 13.6 million viewers. On ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, Redskins-Chiefs averaged an additional 129,000 viewers – 61,000 on ESPN Deportes and 68,000 on ESPN2.

In Washington, D.C., the game delivered an 11.1 rating on ESPN and a 12.1 rating on WJLA-ABC, for a combined 23.2 rating in the market. In Kansas City, the game delivered a 15.2 rating on ESPN and a 26.9 on KMBC-ABC, for a combined 42.1 rating in the market.

The top 10 metered markets (not including those of the competing teams): Richmond (17.0), Norfolk (14.3), Denver (13.7), San Diego (11.9), Philadelphia (11.6), Baltimore (11.5), Buffalo (11.0), New Orleans (10.9), Seattle (10.2) and Phoenix (9.8).

On CBS, the debut of new sitcom “9JKL” managed to retain just 50 percent of its “Big Bang Theory” lead-in among adults 18-49 (1.6 rating, from BBT’s 3.2). This was below retention rates of other recent CBS series premieres that had also aired out of “The Big Bang Theory”

“Young Sheldon” Sep. 25, 2017: 93 percent (3.82 rating, from BBT’s 4.09)

“The Great Indoors” Oct. 27, 2016: 56 percent (1.91 rating, from BBT’s 3.39)

“Kevin Can Wait” Sep. 19, 2016: 69 percent (2.58 rating, from BBT’s 3.76)

“Life in Pieces” Sep. 21, 2015: 56 percent (2.63 rating, from BBT’s 4.69)

“The Millers” Oct. 3, 2013: 63 percent (3.3 rating, from BBT’s 5.2)
