Monday Overnights: Modest Start for ‘The Proposal’ on ABC

The home of “The Bachelorette,” ABC, featured the series-premiere of “The Proposal,” hosted by former Bachelor Jesse Palmer. This dating series or sorts, showcasing a series of pageant-style rounds to woo a “mystery suitor (or “suitress”) whose identity is concealed from them, finished second in the 10 p.m. ET hour with a 2.7 rating/5 share in households. While this is a marked improvement over short-lived scripted drama “Still Star-Crossed” on the year-ago evening (1.2/ 2 on 6/19/17), it also slipped from the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “The Bachelorette” (4.0/ 7) by 32 percent.

Overall, “The Bachelorette” topped the night at a typical 4.1/ 7 in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m.

In season-finale news was “Supergirl” on The CW at a typical 1.4/ 3 in the 8 p.m. hour, which led into “Whose Line is it Anyway?” at a 0.7/ 1 (#5) in the 9 p.m. half-hour. Next fall, “Supergirl” moves into the Sunday 8 p.m. hour into the reboot of “Charmed.”

On NBC, moving summer staple “American Ninja Warrior” into the Monday 9-11 p.m. has not improved its performance, with a 2.6/ 5 in households from 9-11 p.m. (out of a 2.0/ 4 for “Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” now in the Monday 8 p.m. hour). Comparably, this was a loss of 24 percent from the 3.4/ 6 in the Monday 8-10 p.m. block one year earlier.

Also original was Fox’s veteran “So You Think You Can Dance” at an improved 2.6/ 5 in the 8 p.m. hour. And older-skewing detective drama “Elementary” on CBS, which will return in 2017-18 in midseason, won the 10 p.m. hour with a 3.3/ 6 in the overnights. Among adults 18-49, however, expect a distant third-place finish.
