Monday Overnights: ‘Scorpion’ on CBS Concludes Season – or Series – on a Quiet Note

'The Voice' Leads NBC to More Monday Overnight Victory

MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2018

Household Rating/Share
NBC: 4.8/ 8, ABC: 4.2/ 7, CBS: 3.4/ 6, Fox: 2.7/ 4, CW: 1.0/ 2

Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:

CW: +67, Fox: +23, NBC: – 4, CBS: -11, ABC: -30

Ratings Breakdown:
“The Voice” led NBC to another Monday overnight victory, with a 5.8 rating/10 share in households from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that was close to year-ago levels, with an 18 percent advantage over competing “American Idol” on ABC (4.9/ 8). While the variation in the key demos will be smaller, “American Idol” trailed year-ago time period occupant “Dancing with the Stars” (8.0/13 on 4/17/17) by a considerable 39 percent.

In season (or series) finale news, CBS drama “Scorpion” concluded with a 3.6/ 7 in the household overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that bested competing “The Crossing” on ABC and “Good Girls” on NBC (each at a 2.7/ 5) by 33 percent. But “Scorpion” was also 16 percent below the 4.3/ 8 on the year-ago evening, and a lack of available time periods for new dramas on the Eye net could make a fifth season renewal for “Scorpion” unlikely. CBS announces its programming plans for next fall on Wednesday, May 16.

In return series news was “Supergirl” on The CW at a 1.5/ 2 (#5) in the 8 p.m. hour, which was 36 percent above the 1.1/ 2 was “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” one week earlier. Next on The CW was on the fence “iZombie” at a modest 0.6/ 1 (#5) at 9 p.m., which did not benefit from the improved lead-in support.

Elsewhere, CBS had nothing unusual to report with its 8-10 p.m. sitcom combination of “Kevin Can Wait” (#3: 3.6/ 6), “Man With a Plan” (#3: 3.5/ 6), “Superior Donuts” (#3: 3.2/ 5) and recently introduced “Living Biblically” (#4: 2.6/ 4), which has no chance of a second season. And growth of 35 percent for freshman Fox medical drama “The Resident” (#3: 3.1/ 5 at 9 p.m.) out of sophomore “Lucifer” (#4: 2.3/ 3 at 8 p.m.) is a positive sign for a second season renewal. Comparably, “The Resident” was also 63 percent above failed year-ago time period occupant “APB” (1.9/ 3 on 4/17/17).
