NBA 2k20 Game Review: Is it Worth It?

This year’s NBA 2K20 has made some good strides against its predecessors thanks to the new great mechanics and visual graphics. The NBA 2K series has been running for a long while with some praise to certain games and with some harsh criticism to others. NBA 2K20 is currently playable on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, in addition to Google Stadia, Google’s streaming/gaming platform. The story mode of the game is one of the best in the franchise, which is controlling a player throughout their career from start to finish. It seems that NBA 2K20 is not loved by everyone due to a few changes and limitations, new and old. We’ll be reviewing NBA 2K20 to see if it’s actually worth it or whether it’s all hype.

Visuals and Mechanics

The visuals are strikingly greater than the latest game and with a lot of upgrades to the lighting, rendering, and character traits. The cut scenes of the story mode are visually stunning and with a lot of style. The gameplay mechanics are seeing the greatest improvement they’ve ever seen, with many people considering the game to have the best gameplay in the whole series. Graphics and action are combined beautifully to create more realistic animation and physical interaction.

Mini-Games

The game’s new and bold approach to introducing casino mini-games like pachinko and slot machines is adding some fun to the mix. We have all seen the trailer for NBA 2K20 with slot machines and other casino games, but will there actually be an online slot with NBA theme? NBA-themed online slots would definitely be a trendy slot theme in the coming days.

Story Mode

A lot of people have been put off by the series’ latest story modes throughout the years, but it seems that NBA 2K20 is bringing its story mode back to its glory. The voice acting is superb and professional, aided with great graphics and animation. The story is quite engaging and it incorporates a lot of real and authentic elements from the NBA. Nevertheless, many have complained about the lengthy load times between matches and cut scenes.

Classic Players

NBA 2K20 is still following its predecessors in paying homage to the classics of the sport. Classic teams have been added to the roster and a lot of Hall-of-Famers were included. The renders used are upgraded and one can really see the difference in the renders of players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Ray Allen.

Layups are Too Slow

The gameplay is great, but there are some minor problems that people have complained of, like the layup animations. They’re a bit too slow and make it easy to get blocked as the action is slowed to a rather odd speed.

Overall, NBA 2K20 is good enough for any fan of the previous games to notice a big improvement. The game is, unfortunately, still riddled with micro-transactions, which is the plague of most sports games nowadays, in addition to a little imbalance here and there between stamina and shooting. The few bad apples are definitely susceptible to improvement in the upcoming updates. The final verdict deems it a worthy game to play in 2020.
