NBC Scraps Plans for ‘Xena’ Reboot

Original Series Aired in First-Run Syndication from 1995 to 2001

NBC has decided not to move forward on its plans for a reboot of action/adventure “Xena, Princess Warrior,” which was a spin-off from “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” and a staple in first-run syndication with Lucy Lawless in the title role from 1995 to 2001. “Nothing is happening on that right now. We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot,” said network entertainment president Jennifer Salke. “I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title but the current incarnation of it is dead.”

Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, co-creators of the original series, were set to oversee the revival, which had originally signed “Lost” alum Javier Grillo-Marxuach to write. Grillo-Marxuach left the project in April due to creative differences, which was mainly his desire to develop a potential romance between Xena (Lucy Lawless) and her sidekick Gabrielle (Renee O’Connor) in the original series.
