Anyone with an Apple iPhone knows that software updates can mean big changes. The latest news is the iOS 17 update coming in September 2018. Improvements are available for some commonly used apps, including Safari, Messages, and the Phone app.

The update is only available for iPhones dated 2018 or later.

Here are some of the most anticipated changes coming with the iOS 17 update:

  • Autocorrect improvements

Along with improving the autocorrect feature, users can now finish sentences by tapping the space bar when there is a suggestion.

  • Automatic safety notifications

The Check In feature sends automatic notifications to family or friends, alerting them that you arrived home safely.

  • Authentication improvements

Log-in codes sent to email will automatically show on the keyboard when using Apple’s Mail app with the Safari browser. Text message codes will be deleted automatically upon input.

  • Browsing protection

Password protection and Apple Face ID are available for private browsing mode that allows for unsaved web browsing.

  • Business card trading

All it takes now is to bump two iPhones together to use Apple’s AirDrop to share contact information (user permission required).

  • Contact posters

Users can select a font and photo to appear on other iPhones when calling them.

  • FaceTime videos or audio messages

Even if the person you call is unavailable, you can leave video and audio messages, along with expressive Reactions.

  • Live voicemail

Incoming calls can go directly to voicemail via a button on the lock screen, allowing for real-time transcription during the message so the receiver can pick up the call before the caller finishes the message.

  • No more “hey” – only say “Siri”

Simply saying “Siri” will get you to Apple’s voice assistant.

  • Offline map usage

Map saving offline can help when internet access is not available on remote roads. Better routing is through saving your metropolitan area.

  • Roadside assistance

No cell service? No problem for iPhone 14 or 15 as Apple’s satellite service (SOS) allows for calls to AAA via satellite.

  • StandBy

The new full-screen experience lets you see photos, time, incoming calls, and more when the iPhone is charging and on its side.

These are only some of the many positive changes with the new iOS 17 update. From new mental health features in the Health app to sharing AirTags to 30-day activity viewing in the Home app, the benefits are seemingly endless. Another positive feature is that iPhones will warn if any unexpected and unwanted nude pictures are being sent.

Apple iPhone Warnings

If you are excited about the upgrades with iOS 17, remember they work only on newer models, not the older iPhone 8 or X. However, with plenty of specials available now with the rollout of the iPhone 15 models, many affordable upgrade options are on the market.

  • Safety warnings

Apple iPhones are safe devices that feature the latest technology, but there are still some warnings to know:

  • Battery and repairs

Only a trained technician should service the battery or repair the iPhone to avoid damage, injury, overheating, or fire.

  • Charging

Do not use damaged cables when charging, as they can cause phone damage, electric shock, fire, or injury. Keep the phone well-ventilated when charging and away from metallic objects when wireless charging. Keep charging adapters away from sinks, tubs, and other wet locations. Do not connect or disconnect power adapters with wet hands.

  • Distractions

Do not use the iPhone while driving, riding a bike, or in any other potentially dangerous situation where you need to pay attention.

  • Handling

Avoid dropping, burning, crushing, or puncturing the phone, and keep it away from liquid. Cracked glass can cause injury, so use a case and screen protector.

  • Hearing loss

Avoid high volumes, as prolonged exposure can cause hearing damage.

  • Heat exposure

iPhones and USB power adapters can overheat, especially in prolonged use or in hot cars. Keep them well-ventilated and NOT UNDER pillows, blankets, or towels.

  • Lasers

iPhones from 7 on have proximity sensors that contain laser systems. Disabling of the lasers may occur due to damage or malfunction. Warning notifications require contacting Apple or an authorized Apple service provider.

  • Magnets and medical devices

Check with your medical device manufacturer or physician if you have any medical devices that could be affected by magnets and radios, including defibrillators and pacemakers.

  • Navigation

Maps may not be complete or updated, so use common sense and observe road signs and conditions.

  • Sleeping

Apple warns against the possible dangers of sleeping next to a charging iPhone. The guidance mentions, “Don’t sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body, when it’s connected to a power source.” The World Health Organization has previously warned that sleeping with your phone close to you can cause an alteration in the system of certain self–regulating processes, such as our biological clock or cardiac rhythm. Such changes in our body can cause fatigue and a constant lack of energy, which also can be caused by hormonal issues, such as growth hormone deficiency. On September 15, 2023, Apple announced that they would update iPhone 12 software for users in France after the country warned that radiation levels were higher than they allow. Apple stated there was no safety concern; the problem was due to specific testing protocols used by the French regulators.

There have long been debates about the safety of cell phones, including radiation effects and cancer risks. While current studies negate any concerns, those with worries should always err on the side of caution.

Safety guidelines for all phones include keeping them away from skin contact, putting the phone on the other side of the room when sleeping (or in another room), and using the speaker mode whenever possible.

Conclusion

The Apple iOS 17 update provides iPhone users with many fun and exciting new benefits. With the release of the new iPhone 15 series, users may find a whole new world of options at their fingertips.

By following some basic safety guidelines, you should be able to enjoy using your iPhone in exciting new ways.
