In a year where the pandemic cause the closing of movie theaters across the country, 16 of the 23 winners last night at the 93rd Academy Awards went to projects premiering on streaming services. “Nomadland,” which was acquired by Hulu, was the first Best Picture winner from a streaming service. Netflix topped the night at seven wins.

“Nomadland” won three Oscars, including Chloe Zhao as the second woman historically to be named Best Director (following Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” in 2010) and Frances McDormand for Best Actress. This was McDormand’s third win in the category.

In a surprise victory, Anthony Hopkins was named Best Actor for his role as a dementia-ridden man in “The Father” over the late Chadwick Boseman for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” At 83, Hopkins is now the oldest winner ever. His previous Oscar came in 1992 for “The Silence of the Lambs.”

“Minari” co-star Yuh-jung Youn, as predicted, won over Glenn Close in the supporting actress category. With her eighth bid for “Hillbilly Elegy,” Close ties Peter O’Toole as the actor with the most nominations without ever having won. And Daniel Kaluuya earned his first Oscar for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” playing Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton, in a movie that released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.
