OSRS System Requirements

Can your PC run Old-School Runescape or not?

Old School Runescape may be an old game (and it shows), but that’s just one of its charms. It’s something when a 15-year-old game build does better than some of the most recent MMO releases today. There’s just something about the game that draws players in. They keep on playing, whether they grind for skill levels, battle bosses, or just farm OSRS gold.

Fortunately, the game doesn’t require much to run on a system. Here are the system requirements for the game.

System Requirements

For Windows (minimum):

  • OS: Windows 7 or higher (64-bit)
  • CPU: Intel i3+/AMD @ 2.4 GHz
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • GPU: GeForce 400x, Intel HD 4x, Radeon 7xxx +
  • A broadband internet connection
  • 200 MB free storage space

For Mac:

  • CPU: Intel i3+ @ 2.4 GHz
  • GPU: AMD Radeon 7xxx+
  • RAM: 4GB

For Mobile:

  • Android: Lollipop (5.0) or higher
  • iOS: 10.0 or later

Additional Information

Despite being a 15-year-old build of the game, it does not support the following operating systems:

  • Windows 95
  • Windows 98
  • Windows ME
  • Windows XP
  • Mac OSX 10.4
  • Mac OSX 10.5 32-bit

It might be possible to still use these to play the game. However, if you encounter a bug or other error, you might not receive support or help. It’s best to follow the minimum requirements for smooth gameplay. Besides, using an outdated OS poses many security risks and other dangers, so it’s best to upgrade to Windows 7 or higher.

Following an unannounced update in 2020, browsers that support NPAPI won’t play the web version of the game. Since it’s hard to find any browser with Java or the above support, it’s almost impossible to play the game on a browser. There are still some workarounds, but you should download the game client instead.

From these requirements, you won’t need an expensive gaming rig to play OSRS. Even older laptops (as long as they run at least Windows 7 64-bit) will do. On mobile, as long as your phone or tablet isn’t too old, it’ll run the game. All that makes it accessible to the broadest range of players.

With the game being free-to-play, there’s no reason not to play it. Bonds increase the content and features you can enjoy, but the F2P content is enough to give hours of enjoyment. Besides, if you save up enough OSRS GP (and while risky, it’s possible to buy OSRS gold), you can buy one without spending real money. Prices have gone higher, so it’ll be a long OSRS gold farming period.

Still, it’s worth it as more than half of the game is locked behind that paywall. Plus, once you get the bond, it’ll be easier to farm gold and get your next bond.

Other Requirements

Of course, you’ll need a mouse and keyboard to play the game. There are workarounds for controller input on PC, and it is possible on mobile. Still, the most comfortable way is the keyboard and mouse.

If you need to use controllers, using the Steam client might make it easier to use them. For mobile devices and tablets, a mouse is still preferable. Jagex doesn’t discourage players from doing so. Just note that it can be risky.

Jagex prohibit macros, as it gives rise to botting and other undesirable behavior in the game. While you are a real player using a controller, the game’s bot and macro-detecting features might flag you with unusual behavior. Be careful to keep to the guidelines even as you use a controller!

Another consideration for mobile users is data usage. OSRS, aside from the initial data download, uses up only a tiny portion per hour, so you can enjoy the game as much as you want. The only limit is your data plan. It also only takes about 30-40MB of storage space — that’s significantly smaller than most mobile games.

Conclusions

These low requirements mean that Old School Runescape is an easy game to pick up and play. You only need your phone, tablet, laptop, or PC, and you’re good to go. You don’t even have to buy a subscription if you don’t want to! Farm enough OSRS gold, and you can get bonds for more features and the rest of the game.

It also makes it easy to invite friends and family to play with you. With them at your back, you won’t feel lonely while playing. OSRS’s large community makes it easy to make new friends (and enemies), too.

The world of Gielinor is at your fingertips, waiting for new adventurers like you. It’s filled with quests, stories, activities, locations, and even OSRS items to collect! Every new corner of the world is a new adventure that’s unique to experience. Take your time and enjoy the sights. Playing a game isn’t a race you need to finish first.

Have fun playing OSRS!
