Quibi Orders ‘Varsity Blues’ Reboot

New Streaming Service Expected to Launch in April 2020

Upcoming streamer Quibi is spinning off 1999 theatrical “Varsity Blues” into a weekly series. The film starred James Van Der Beek as Jonathan “Mox” Moxon, the backup quarterback for West Canaan who’s elevated to QB1 following an injury to the team’s starter, Lance Harbor, played by the late Paul Walker. Mox clashes with the team’s authoritarian coach (Jon Voight), who forces players to play through potentially serious injuries. Amy Smart, Ali Larter, Scott Caan, Ron Lester, Eliel Swinton, and Thomas. F Duffy also starred in the film.

Mike Tollin and Tova Laiter, two producers from the movie, will serve as executive producers on the series alongside John Gatins and Peter Guber. Tollin and Guber’s MSM will produce with Paramount Television with Maia Glickman overseeing the project for MSM. There is no confirmation at present on casting or the number of episodes of “Varsity Blues” ordered.

Quibi is expected to launch in April 2020.
