Ratings Breakdown
CBS took solid center stage on this first Tuesday in January in the household overnights care of its drama combination of “NCIS” (#1 for evening: 11.3 rating/18 share), spin-off “NCIS: New Orleans” (10.1/16) and freshman “Limitless” (#2: 4.5/ 8). But “Limitless” trailed year-ago occupant “Person of Interest” (6.2/10 on 1/06/15) by 27 percent. And it was 18 percent below competing “Chicago Med” on NBC (5.5/10), which is a shoo-in for a second season renewal. As for “Person of Interest,” it will return at some point later this season.

In a totally revamped night, Fox generated minimal interest with two hours of live action comedies. Overrated “New Girl” opened season five with a mere 2.5/ 4 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which tied a repeat of relocated “Fresh Off the Boat” on ABC for third in the half-hour. One year earlier, “New Girl” scored an almost identical 2.4/ 4 in the Tuesday 9 p.m. half-hour. Lead-out “Grandfathered” moved into the 8:30 p.m. half-hour with a lackluster 2.2/ 3 (#3). Together, “New Girl” and “Grandfathered,” on average, were 36 percent below (in household rating) the 3.6/ 6 for year-ago occupant “MasterChef Junior.”

Next on Fox were the time period debuts of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#4: 2.0/ 3) and “The Grinder” (#4: 1.6/ 3) from 9-10 p.m., which trailed the year-ago pairing of “New Girl” (2.4/ 4) and “The Mindy Project” (1.8/ 3) by an average of 14 percent. Outside of social media attention, Fox unfortunately cannot make inroads on Tuesday in the traditional ratings.

On ABC, airing out of the aforementioned “Fresh Off the Boat” repeat was an encore telecast of “The Muppets” (#4: 1.5/ 2) at 8:30 p.m. A Tuesday 9 p.m. telecast of “Shark Tank” (#3: 3.1/ 5) proves the series is better off staying on Friday. And it led into the return of spin-off “Beyond the Tank” at a compatible 2.9/ 5 (#3) at 10 p.m.

In other season-premiere news, “Hollywood Game Night” on NBC, hosted by Emmy winner Jane Lynch, finished a distant second behind “NCIS” with a 3.1/ 5 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that bested Fox’s competing “New Girl” and “Grandfathered” by an average of 32 percent. And it led into “Chicago Fire” at a 5.1/ 8 from 9-10 p.m., which built by a hefty 65 percent. Aforementioned freshman hit “Chicago Med” capped off the night with a 5.5/10.

Elsewhere, The CW populated the evening with encore telecasts of “The Flash” (#5: 0.9/ 1) and “iZombie” (#5: 0.1/ 1).
