SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2017
What follows are the metered market household results by half-hour for Sunday, October 22, 2017:
Household Rating/Share
NBC: 9.8/16, CBS: 7.7/13, ABC: 2.1/ 3, Fox: 1.9/ 3
-Percent Change From the Year-Ago Opening Sunday (9/25/16):
NBC: +13, ABC: – 9, CBS and Fox: -10 each
Ratings Breakdown:
If it is Sunday in fourth quarter it is victory for NBC, with the 23 to 7 win for the Patriots over the Falcons on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” at an estimated 12.6 rating/21 share in the household overnights from 8:30-11:15 p.m. ET.
CBS, which did not begin its regularly scheduled Sunday night line-up until 7:36 p.m. ET, ranked a comfortable second overall with its combination of “60 Minutes” (#1: 10.3/17), recent drama entry “Wisdom of the Crowd” (5.7/ 9), “NCIS: Los Angeles” 5.6/ 9) and “Madam Secretary” (4.5/ 9). My crystal balls tells me “Wisdom of the Crowd” is about to get a full season episode order. And my programming instinct tells me CBS should consider shifting “Madam Secretary” to Monday at 9 p.m. ET to fix the current waning two-hour sitcom block.
Elsewhere, the results were minimal on this fourth Sunday of the new TV season. ABC’s sophomore “The Toy Box” (#4: 1.5/ 2 at 7 p.m.) opened 44 percent below “America’s Funniest Home Videos” on the year-ago evening (2.7/ 4 on 10/24/16), which led into a 2.6/ 4 (#3) for relocated “America’s Funniest Home Videos” at 8 p.m. Relocated “Shank Tank,” which I predict will be back on Friday nights in midseason, dipped to a season low 2.8/ 4 (#3) at 9 p.m., and that led into a series-low 1.5/ 3 (#3) for freshman “Ten Days in the Valley” at 10 p.m. Thankfully, ABC only only has 10 episodes of “Ten Days in the Valley.”
Fox, meanwhile, could not compete with its combination of a repeat of “The Mick” (#3: 2.6/ 5 at 7 p.m.), and original installments of “Bob’s Burgers” (#3: 1.8/ 3), “The Simpsons” (#4: 2.3/ 4), recent entry “Ghosted” (#4: 1.8/ 3), “Family Guy” (#4: 1.7/ 3) and “The Last Man on Earth” (#4: 1.3/ 2) from 7:30-10 p.m. ET.
