Sunday Overnights: Shocking Departure on ‘American Idol’

Night 2 of Limited CBS Drama 'The Red Line' Loses Steam

Sunday, May 5, 2019

Household Ratings/Share
CBS: 3.9/ 7, ABC: 3.6/ 7, NBC: 2.2/ 4, Fox: 1.1/ 2, CW: 0.7/ 1

Percent Change From the Year-Ago Evening:
NBC: +16, Fox: no change, ABC: – 5, CBS: -26

Ratings Breakdown:
Song bested dance in the household overnights once again on this first Sunday in May with “American Idol” on ABC (#1: 4.2 rating/7 share from 8-10 p.m.) 62 percent above competing “World of Dance” on NBC (#3: 2.6/ 5). Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, who departed on ”American Idol,” should have been the winner in my humble opinion.

At 10 p.m., ABC’s “Shark Tank” finished second with a 2.5/ 5 in the household overnights, which was 47 percent above competing “Good Girls” on NBC (#3: 1.7/ 3). Both series are confirmed to return next season.

Due to the PGA Golf Tour, CBS’ primetime line-up was slid back approximately 20-minutes. Results by individual program, therefore, are approximate. Of note, and this is not positive, was noticeable erosion for night two of CBS limited series “The Red Line,” which already started modestly one week earlier.

    • Also agree. Can’t believe they didn’t choose him, he was the best. Was his family there? Does anyone know? He was a little off in the beginning, but has a beautiful voice. Then again, Adam Lambert, Kellie Pickler, Clay Aiken et al didn’t win and have careers. That said, started watching again this year and I really like the judges and the faster version of the show. I hope it continues to do well.

      • I did not notice his family was there, but his partner was there. Yes he was somewhat off in the beginning of Somewhere, but he certainly improved as he went forward! I was amazed. He will have a career. Also Jennifer Hudson has had a nice career too. I also like the judges and this year has been better than last year.

  1. FROM ABC
ABC Sunday Prime Time (7-11pm – 5.7 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49): ABC posted another dominant Sunday victory among Adults 18-49 (1.0/4), beating NBC by 43% (0.7/3), Fox by 67% (0.6/3) and CBS by 100% (0.5/2).

ABC was also the most-watched network overall on Sunday for the 2nd week running (5.7 million). In fact, for the 4th straight week with America’s Funniest Home Videos (0.9/5), American Idol (1.1/5) and Shark Tank (0.7/3), ABC finished as the #1 broadcaster in all 4 hours of Sunday’s prime time among Adults 18-49.

    · ABC’s American Idol won the night among Adults 18-49, ranking as Sunday’s #1 broadcast entertainment series for the 10th week in a row (on each telecast this season).

Editors, please note: ABC’s American Idol aired live across the U.S., so pre-prime viewing in the Pacific Time Zone is not yet included in the Fast Affiliate averages. Last Sunday’s telecast jumped by 800k Total Viewers and by 2-tenths of an Adult 18-49 rating point with the inclusion of the pre-prime viewing in the National Live + Same Day ratings released by Nielsen on Tuesday, which emerged as Idol’s most-watched telecast this season and 2nd highest number with young adults.

  2. I’m sorry I don’t agree about Jeremiah because I always had him down as a possible elimination this week and since the field was so tight anyways somebody good was going home.

Alejandro is the best one and I always had him winning or Laci but don’t sleep on Line or Wade those guys have big fanbases.

  3. I thought that the judges would be using the save this week thought they made the right choice with picking Laci.

    • Yeah, I agree they made the right decision on picking Laci over Jeremiah at the end of the day. This was the first off week Laci had and she still has the best potential to win against Alejandro in the finale and have a successful country music career after the show. I always knew the save would be used if Laci or Alejandro was ever in trouble.
