Sunday Overnights: Solid Sampling for New Fox Medical Drama ‘The Resident’

What follows are the metered market household results by half-hour for the four broadcast networks for Sunday, January 21, 2018:

Ratings Breakdown:
”The NFC Championship,” of course, led Fox to a significant Sunday overnight victory, with an estimated 24.7 rating/56 share in households from 6:45-9:45 p.m. ET. The adult 18-49 rating was an approximate 15.6. As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always estimated.

Following the post game in the 9:30 p.m. ET half-hour (#1: 16.0/25) was the premiere/preview of Fox medical drama “The Resident,” which was very adequately sampled at a dominant 6.8 household rating and a 3.4 rating in adults 18-49 from 10:04-11:04 p.m. ET. “The Resident” debuts in its regularly scheduled Monday 9 p.m. ET time period (out of “Lucifer”) this evening.

Elsewhere, CBS’ veteran “60 Minutes” celebrated 50 years on the air with a special clips edition in the 7 p.m. hour at a 6.2/ 9 (#2) in the household overnights. That led into another edition of “60 Minutes” at a 5.6/ 8 in the 8 p.m. hour (#2), followed by encore telecasts of “S.W.A.T.” (#2: 3.0/ 5) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#2: 3.2/ 6) from 9-11 p.m.

On ABC, the network for some reason has rushed through this current season of “Shark Tank,” with two more original episodes averaging a modest 2.7/ 5 from 9-11 p.m. ABC should certainly move “Shark Tank” back to Friday next season.

Earlier in the evening on ABC were two episodes (repeat and original) of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” at a 2.2/ 3 at 7 p.m. (#3) and a 2.3/ 3 at 8 p.m. (#2).

NBC countered the “NFC Championship” on Fox with two repeat installments of “Little Big Shots,” hosted by Steve Harvey, at an average 1.7/ 3 from 7-9 p.m., and two repeat episodes of “Ellen’s Game of Games” at an average 2.1/ 3 from 9-11 p.m.
