Sunday Ratings: Football Rules on NBC; Modest Sampling for ‘Batwoman’ on The CW

'Kids Say the Darndest Things' on ABC Does Not Impress

THIS FIRST SET OF NETWORK DATA FOR SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7 IS BASED ON THE FAST AFFILIATE RATINGS FROM NIELSEN.

What follows are the fast affiliate rating results for Sunday, October 6, 2019. These results are time period based and are subject to change:

Total Viewers:
NBC: 13.34 million, Fox: 12.97, CBS: 6.58, ABC: 4.30

Adults 18-49:
NBC: 4.0 rating/17 share, Fox: 3.0/12, ABC and CBS: 0.7/ 3 each

Key Obervations:
-If it is Sunday, it is NBC ruling with football. It will remain such all in fourth quarter. NBC’s dominance, of course, is subject to change in first quarter 2020 after football season.

-The CW does not measure its success, of lack of, by the Nielsen ratings. Social media is a far greater benchmark. But just 1.80 million viewers and a 0.5 rating/2 share in adults 18-49 for the debut of the long-awaited “Batwoman” at 8 p.m. is, nonetheless, disappointing.

-“Supergirl,” now at 9 p.m. on Sunday, did not benefit by the lead-in support from “Batwoman.” But they are, no doubt, compatible.

-The revival of “Kids Say the Darndest Things” on ABC gets brownie points for building by 50 percent in adults 18-49 out of veteran “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (09/ 4 vs. 0.6/ 3). But 5.40 million viewers for the premiere (#3 in the 8 p.m. hour) is nothing to boast about.

-“Shark Tank” has never been the same since ABC relocated it to Sunday in the fall of 2017. A better option is to move it back into the Friday 8 p.m. anchor position (in place of sitcoms).

-Competing “The Rookie” on ABC and the season premiere of “Madam Secretary” on CBS at 10 p.m. were lost in the hour opposite football.

-CBS remains marred by the particularly older audience skew on Sunday. Tops in the 18-49 demo was granddaddy “60 Minutes” at a 0.9/ 4 at 7 p.m.

  1. FROM THE CW

L+SD is a smaller and smaller portion of The CW’s overall audience, particularly the younger demos. (I think same can be said for everyone this year)
We see tons of delayed viewing in L+7 and streaming.

Two key takeaways, BATWOMAN delivered a larger audience (1.8mil) than the premieres of both SUPERGIRL and CHARMED from last year.
BATWOMAN grew or held 100% of its audience into the second half hour.
SUPERGIRL improved over last year’s finale in both viewers (1.3mil) and a18-49 (0.4/1).

Our DC shows typically see gains of high double digits (if not triple digits) in L+7 in all demos and are among our most viewed shows on our streaming platform.
Last season, Supergirl averaged gains of 79% in total viewers, 88% in adults 18-34 and 95% in adults 18-49 from L+SD to L+7.

Plus, remember viewers will be able to catch every episode of BATWOMAN the day after air for free and without authentication or log-in on The CW app or CWTV.com.
So viewers will be able to binge-watch BATWOMAN from the beginning at any point as the season progresses.
