So here are five great alternative cameras for those who want the quality and versatility of Gopros without breaking the bank.
GoPro Alternative #1: Contour Cameras
Contour cameras are a great alternative to GoPro. They shoot high-quality video at 720p, 1080p, or even 2K resolutions, have built-in Bluetooth® and WiFi® connectivity options, long battery life, and are very user-friendly. The main drawback of the Contour is that it doesn’t have as wide an array of mounting options as the GoPro. However, many 3rd party companies sell accessories that can mount your camera just about anywhere! These are some of our favorites for shooting with a Contour:
GoPro Alternative #2: Sony Action Camera
Our second alternative is one of the most potent consumer-level action cams on the market. The Sony Action Cam shoots 1080p at 60 frames per second, 2.7k at 30 fps, and even 4k video at 15 fps. In addition, it has a full-sized HDMI out port, so you can plug the Action Cam directly into your HDTV to see your footage! This camera is very versatile and records amazing quality videos in almost any situation. However, its biggest drawback is its price: The Sony ActionCam currently runs for $200 on Amazon (a newer model has just been released). Still, if you’re looking for ultimate performance in an action cam without breaking the bank, this may be the one for you!
GoPro Alternative #3: SJCAM
SJCAM action cams come in various shapes and sizes with a range of features. At around $100, SJCAM offers a lot of bang for your buck. We like this camera’s versatility: It’s compatible with GoPro accessories, and many 3rd party mounts will work with it as well (see our previous review on the SJCAM M10 ). We like the “SJ4000” version of this camera; however, there are also versions that shoot 4K videos! Another great option is to check out older models such as the original SJCAM or SJ4000; you can often find them selling for under $50 on eBay and other sites.
GoPro Alternative #4: The TomTom
Bandit claims to be the “world’s smartest action cam.” It has built-in sensors to detect your speed, G-force, elevation, and even heart rate. This is the perfect camera for tracking your performance while doing sports like skiing or mountain biking. Unfortunately, with a price tag of $399 on Amazon (down from $499), it’s also one of the more expensive options on our list. However, if you’re looking for something to track metrics while you adventure out in the wilds, this may be the right choice for you!
GoPro Alternative #5: Olympus TG-Tracker
Our last alternative is another excellent camera with an impressive array of features. The Olympus TG-Tracker shoots 4k video at 30 fps and 1080p at 60fps. If that doesn’t impress you enough, how about the fact that it’s waterproof for up to 50 feet or that it comes with a built-in GPS and 3-axis image stabilization? Just like the TomTom Bandit, this camera has many of its sensors, which can be used to track your location and G-forces. The Olympus TG Tracker is one of the most impressive cameras on our list, but it doesn’t come cheap: Currently selling for $299 on Amazon.
