Thursday Final Nationals: New York Democratic Debate on CNN and NY1 Dominates the Night on Cable

Viewers Continue to Avoid Fitness Fare as Fox's 'American Grit' and NBC's 'Strong' Struggle

A double-dose of drama “Grey’s Anatomy” helped ABC take top honors Thursday night all-around: in total viewers (6.9 million) and in all key demos.

The ratings woes of fitness competitions continue as the oft-promoted “American Grit” for Fox, hosted by WWE superstar John Cena, was scarcely sampled in its series premiere. Earlier in the evening, NBC’s “Strong” which debuted one night earlier did not fare that much better in its regular Thursday 8 p.m. time slot.

Thursday’s most-watched cable network in prime time was CNN with an average of 4.11 million viewers, due to the “Democratic Presidential Debate” — the ninth one in this political cycle, taking place in Brooklyn, NY prior to the April 19 New York primary. 5.47 million watched the debate on CNN while 171,000 tuned in on its simulcast partner Time Warner Cable News NY1 in the New York market. While the debate topped the night among all cable entries, by far (e.g., it doubled the viewership of the day’s second most-watched cable program, Fox News Channel’s “The Kelly File”), only two other past debates (of the 20 that have been broadcast this cycle) drew less viewership — both were Democratic: Feb. 4 on MSNBC (4.5 million) and Mar. 6 on CNN (5.5 million).
