Thursday Overnights: ABC’s Summer Line-Up Left at the Starting Gate

Ratings Breakdown:
ABC was off, but not necessarily running with its summer Thursday night line-up. Season two of the revival of “The Gong Show,” now at 8 p.m., opened with a modest 2.1 rating/4 share in the household overnights in the 8 p.m. hour. Comparably, that was 25 percent below the 2.8/ 5 for its series premiere on the year-ago evening at 10 p.m. ET. And it trailed NBC’s competing “Little Big Shots” (#2: 3.7/ 7), hosted by Steve Harvey, by 43 percent.

Next on the alphabet net was the season premiere of “The Match Game,” hosted by Alec Baldwin, at a 2.4/ 4 (#2) at 9 p.m., followed by the series-premiere of scripted drama “Take Two” at a 2.4/ 5 (#1) at 10 p.m. Since most new series drop by 10 to 20 percent in week two, I would not get too used to “Take Two.”

Also original last night were two more episodes of NBC sophomore sitcom “Marlon,” which could not compete at an average 1.8/ 3 in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m. And Fox singing competition “The Four: Battle for Stardom” lagged at a modest 1.8/ 3 from 8-10 p.m.
