What makes a family TV series different from the rest? Well, it is a true reflection of how our families operate. We see people onscreen sitting on a sofa engaged in a never-ending banter, quarreling over a difference of opinion, and partaking in meals that end up bringing everyone together.
This is something I like about all the family TV shows. They revolve around ideas that reflect the present moment and its relevancy. They inspire us and give us a wonderful way of exploring our social relations.
When I was given the opportunity to write about the top five family TV series, the difficult part was determining what really makes “family” television. After several deliberations, I was able to pick five shows that are arguably the best ever and appropriate for a family to watch together. In no particular order:
“The Simpsons”
“The Simpsons” is the greatest TV show in history and there are many facts that back this claim. In addition to all those creepy predictions, it went to more places, addressed more issues, and told more jokes than any other comedy has ever done.
This isn’t it. The reason why it is safe to call it a family TV show is because it shows the complicated dynamics between a husband and wife, father and son, brother and sister, daughter and mother, and most importantly, between a student and a teacher.
In short, “The Simpsons” is a conglomeration of satire, comedy, and banter with the concept of family at its core.
“The Office”
Soon after its inception, “The Office” became a popular TV show among the American families because it knew what its viewers liked and how they operated. The way its characters interact directly with the viewers through the camera makes it a real stand-out as opposed to the rest. Secondly, the chemistry between the characters is relatable. They work in small groups, large groups, and sometimes medium groups.
Moreover, it is subtle. You end up laughing your heart out. This is the right show to binge-watch if you are planning a weekend with your family.
“Modern Family”
In a world with an abundance of tense and gritty TV series taking over the industry, sometimes all you need is to sit back and relax with a more lighthearted show. Whenever we think about a show like this, Modern Family comes to mind, being the perfect example of a family sitcom.
It is a mockumentary-style comedy that brings us closer to the lives of three ordinary families living in Los Angeles. The likable cast, the perfect comic timing, and the warm family vibe is entertaining for everyone.
Moreover, all families can relate to this show, as it is an epitome of how families operate in real-life, struggling through constant conflicts and resolutions.
“Friday Night Lights”
We all love Football, and in the present times, shows about football rarely translate well on the screen. To be honest, it is quite impossible to capture the realism and drama surrounding the game. You might argue why this show is even part of this list but believe me, it’s the only show out there that perfectly represents the serious and topical issues teenagers face in their lives and on the field.
“The Big Bang Theory”
It doesn’t matter if you love science or not, this show will make you learn about things in a peculiar way. The mystic persona of Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), the romantic struggles of Rajesh (Kunal Nayyar), and the bizarre personality of Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) make it a great comedy for families even if you aren’t into scientific humor. The show will teach you about complicated friendships, science, and how to not hit on women.
Final Verdict
